Gillispie Won't Accept Offers From Young Players
National Association of Basketball Coaches says, "Don't do that anymore" and Billy says, "no prob!"

Let's see...
How many coaches voluntarily agree to abide by that decison. It is only a suggestive decision put out by the NABC, nothing else.
I applaud Coach G for saying he will abide by that decison, but how many others will not.

Or how many others...
will agree to that decison and come out in public and say it?
We shall see.

Doesnt really matter
At this point it doesnt really matter anyway. Im sure he will uphold the offers he has already made which means our rosters are fairly set for the next four years. AFter G has been here four yours I expect enough success to go toe to toe with the comp for the top 15 players every year and G wont need the recruiting buzz quite as much as he does now.

Few Schools Take Commitments From 8th, 9th, Or 10th Graders
UK didn’t until 2007 and 2008. Tubby didn’t. Pitino didn’t. Sutton didn’t. Hall didn’t. Rupp didn’t.
Earliest prior commitment was Adam Williams in the summer (2002) before his junior year of HS.

Oh come on...
The very early commits are all out there. This may have been the first for UK (as you told me), but other colleges have done before Ky. You know who they are as well as everyone else.

Few Schools Do It
8th, 9th, 10th graders.
Very few schools take commitments from them.
11th graders, sure. Everybody does that.

Gillispie was just reacting to the culture. UK's previous coaches had no such motivation.

Not very often do I do this...
I am basically shy, but I had to put in my 2 cents worth, and that is all it was, over at the CJ board defending our Coach.
It takes a lot to make me really mad, because I hold it in, but….I am tired of our Coach taking the brunt of the earlies.
Night all.

Re: kykat51
Don’t waste the calories it takes to type the words over at the CJ boards.
Gillispie couldn’t care less what the yard birds think about him … neither should you ( of course attempting to follow that advice is many times difficult for the advice giver – me).
Don’t sweat’em kykat, lifes too short to waste time on the envious.

The Culture Changed In 1995
That’s when recruiting changed. HS players straight to NBA. Early commitments to colleges.
UK started taking verbals from HS juniors then. Before that, Chris Harrison was the only UK recruit who verballed as HS junior.

The culture I write of is the culture that presented itself in the last couple of years ...
... not schools accepting verbals from juniors.
Only very recently have coaches asked for and accepted verbals from 8th graders and freshman in high school.

"Recent"
Didn’t Knight famously offer Damon Baily a scholarship in 8th grade?
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

No
He scouted him while he was an 8th grader playing on the varsity team.
UK scouted Blevins as an 8th grader playing varsity at Metcalfe County HS.

Schea Cotton
About 10 years ago. Verballed to UCLA as a HS frosh. Never played there.
It has gotten more Buzz recently but it started around 2000 or so.

Our Coach
has just tried to stay on top of players that look good…assessing talent early.
Like I said earlier, it will be interesting to hear from the other coaches that have done the same for years, and what they will do henceforth.

creating buzz is the first step in recruiting...
Gillispie did nothing that was not allowed. If it is now against the rules than Gillispie will have no problem following the guidelines. Gillispie is now known to everyone playing basketball from 7th grade to 12th grade because of this and that is a very good thing. He is seen as a tireless recruiter with an incredible work ethic. Kentucky is once going to be on the lists of all the top recruits. Stick with the rules Gillispie, do not change anything else! We are all happy!
I do have to say I am amazed no one mentioned who the President of the NABC who made this decision is.
UK has the greatest fans in the world!

President Of NABC Was On 3 Man Comittee
Tubby, Tom Izzo, and Bill Self.
Bill Self and Billy Gillispie are good friends.

It is not a rule yet,,,
a request. Our Coach has agreed to their “request”.
Read it again.

IMO
This has everything to do with our school and our coach. Be it few or many who have recruited/offered or accepted verbals from 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders, it did not get addressed until the Big Blue Nation got involved. As with anything else, the whole college basketball world could do something and it just passes, but when it involves Kentucky then everyone pays attention. Yes sometimes it is lonely at the top. GO CATS!

Funny we’re requesting our colleges not to allow kids to announce what college they’re planning on going to. I understand this has everything to do with recruiting, but it seems ironic that kids are being restricted for feeling out their college options earlier than usual.

Nothing wrong with "feeling out options"
I don’t think the NABC’s statement prevents coaches from talking to recruits; what it does say is that coaches can’t accept verbal commitments until after their sophomore years. Lord knows nearly every college coaching staff in the country will be hounding after the ultra-talented youngers, primarily to do their own evaluations.

Correction
NABC asked coaches to no longer offer a scholarship, not just accepting a verbal. I guess that means coaches will have to say, “you know, we REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you want to be on our team” and wink.
