Slone may be just the walk-on that UK needs
This will be my parting shot from Makaha here on O'ahu. We have enjoyed our visit very much, and now its time for the long trip home. Don't expect much else from me until late Thursday or early Friday.
Slone looks like he may be the next big walk-on at Kentucky. We have had walk-ons contribute over the years, with Anthony Epps being the one that comes first to my mind. If Slone could only be half the player Epps was, he will win a place in the hearts and minds of the Big Blue Nation.
Aloha for now.

FYI
I linked that same story early this morning (without the Epps comparison) as a FanShot. It should be interesting to see how he plays with D. Miller this weekend. I have family in town, or otherwise I might try to head to the Louisville Gardens to see it. . .

Oh
and safe travels back. The weather here has cooled slightly (from 98 a few days ago), but I think you’ll be getting back just in time for it to start a-blazin again.

AC is broke in the office
Yeah… I’m sitting indoors in 80 degree temps.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

off topic...
but interesting, and I haven’t noticed it mentioned here yet: Matt Jones’ blog is quoting Scout in saying that Jordan Crawford is transfering from falling-apart-by-the-minute IU. Interesting, very interesting….....
Come on, Joe—sell your talented little brother on the REAL college basketball royalty ; )

I just
went over these and read the story. It sounds like it’s final. My question is this – could Indiana put restrictions on where he transfers? That is to say, does the coaching change restrict the ability to of IU to bar him from certain schools?

Jordan
Over at Inside the Hall, they seem to be under the impression that A) Joe’s relationship with BCG was poison and that B) Jordan is undisciplined. Considering how the season turned out and where Joe is right now, it seems more likely that Joe may have been preaching the gospel according to BCG in little bro’s ear. I know the Crawford family is very much involved in the decisions their sons make and I’d hazard a guess that the discipline UK now offers might just appeal. There was also word of Jordan being seend earlier this year wearing a UK shirt…

Yes, IU can put restrictions on where Crawford can transfer.

Hopefully ...
... they won’t restrict us. Remember when we tried to restrict Stone from Louisville? That was a public relations nightmare. Right now, I don’t think IU needs that kind of debacle.

I Think IU Will Release Him 100%
They don’t need and can’t afford ANY negative news going into the NCAA sanctions process.
I think he will go to Detroit Mercy.

I agree ...

Where is FortyYear
when we need him? That is huge news on lil bro Crawford! He is very talented from what I saw in the Ky-IU game last year.

Not Huge News At All
I doubt Jordan Crawford transfers to UK.

My exact thoughts
Moss was VERY solid. He really showed some leadership when it counted.
Epps and Moss are two of the greatest walk-ons I can remember.
Distant family in the hills, who watch FAR too much basketball, say Slone is legit. And not just because he is a mountain kid. They really feel like he got bad luck with all of the “stars” in the class and just could not break through in the hype and media. They feel like he can certainly contribute 6-8 points in spot “need a tre” duty. They do think his feet are a bit slow on D and could get exposed off the drive. But his clutchy ice veins could play a big roll. He would also be under scouted for a while.
We’ll see.

Epps And Moss
Epps was on athletic scholarship all 4 years at UK. It is great myth that he was a walk-on at UK.
Moss was on academic scholarship all 4 years at UK. Techincally a walk-on but on scholarship for his academics.

SOB
I had no idea. Then Epps SUCKED!
JOKE! I loved him.
I will still take Moss as walk-on. As long as it is not an athletic scholly who cares how he buys his books. I actually thought his parents were paying his way. Doctor Dad I think.
So now who do we put as a second great “recent” walk-on?

"Great" Walk-Ons
Junior Braddy in early 1990’s. Got scholarship in 1993 as senior.
Cameron Mills in mid 1990’s. Got scholarship in 1997 and 98 seasons.

I wish you...
and your better half :) , a safe trip back to Ky. I just detest flying these days with all the restrictions and sometimes long delayed flights. Hope yours is uneventful as far as the bad part.
Cya soon.

Epps
Never was a walk-on. On scholarship each of his 4 years at UK. When he first committed, he agreed to walk on but O’Bannon went to UCLA so Epps got his scholarship.
by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 11, 2008 11:29 PM EDT 0 recs
Semantics
Epps came to Kentucky as a walk-on. He may have received a scholarship all for years, but he did not come here expecting to have one.
Still not a crook!

True
He committed without the promise of a scholarship.
When O’Bannon opted for UCLA in 1993, Epps got his promised scholarship and kept it all 4 years.

Epps ...
... was a walk-on. He agreed to come to UK without a scholarship, and got one only after Jamal Mashburn left early for the NBA.

Slone
looks good to me. He did have the same HS coach as Pelphrey? Go figure.
by kykat51 on Jun 12, 2008 12:15 AM EDT 0 recs
Agreed
Epps got a scholarship (Mashburn’s) that was offered to O’Bannon first. Pitino spoke at his HS banquet but he opted for UCLA. So Epps got the scholarship and kept it 4 years.
He never attended UK as a walk-on. He was on athletic scholarship from August 1993 through May 1997.
