Its Officially Official: Jasper to Transfer

I really like Derrick as a player and a person -- given what I've seen of him off-the-court. I really do wish him the best.

ridiculous

this might not be the most politically correct comment.

i love derrick as a player and i like what little i’ve heard about him as a person,
but that doesn’t mean this decision is the best.

if there is a problem in his family that has developed recently, then he should
truly go home and assist with it and be there for them. i’ll be the first person in line
to pray for them and hope whatever it is gets worked out.

if not…well…please, derrick, do not tell me you just transferred from a school that
will immortalize you and has already embraced you as a family member just because
one of your old high school or AAU teammates has transferred back to california or
wherever, and has been whispering in your ear about how great it’d be to play together
again. please do not tell me someone else’s decision to transfer back home has
caused you to leave us and transfer back home, too. it was your team next year, man.
It was all yours.

if nothing’s wrong with the family…i don’t get it. sometimes you have to show some
loyalty, man. sometimes you have to finish something you started. but i have the feeling
this decision to transfer is not totally DJ’s own. we will see, based on where he goes.

i’m sure a lot of warm fuzzy comments are coming to contradict me—let em rip, everyone.

Best
that doesn’t mean this decision is the best.

“Best” is extremely relative. It is impossible for me to say what is best for Derrick (or anyone besides myself, for that matter.) I take myself for an example. Coming out of high school, I had above average grades and test scores. I was interested in a high-demand field (computer science.) Many people told me it was “best” for me to get away from small town Kentucky, go to a big name school, get a high-dollar education, head for Silicon Valley, knock down loads of money, and never look back. By most people’s definition, that would be “best.”

I guess I can identify with Derrick, here. I didn’t want to leave home and family. I like small town Kentucky. So I went to Murray State (less than two hours from home) and came home every weekend. I went to Western to get my master’s degree (about an hour from home) and came home twice a week (once to teach at the local community college; again on weekends.) Straight out of college, I went to work as the webmaster for the local community college. I make about $15-20K less per year than my skill set ought to command, even in this area. (Those are the school’s own numbers!)

Was my decision “best”? For me, it was. I am blissfully happy at my job. My wife and I are comfortable, though by no means rich. I live 15 minutes or less from all my immediate family. I think my decision was best. Many others have disagreed with me. But that’s their opinion. By my definition of best, I made the right decision.

I think Derrick is in a similar situation. Quoting you above:

derrick, do not tell me you just transferred from a school that
will immortalize you and has already embraced you as a family member just because
one of your old high school or AAU teammates has transferred back to california or
wherever, and has been whispering in your ear about how great it’d be to play together
again. please do not tell me someone else’s decision to transfer back home has
caused you to leave us and transfer back home, too. it was your team next year, man.
It was all yours.

Perhaps this is the reason Derrick transferred, and perhaps for him, that is “best.” Through our blue-tinted glasses, no way is this best. With regard to basketball, it’s hard to see how this is best. But we don’t know how Derrick defines best.

I love Derrick’s game. I was hoping against hope that he would return to UK. He seems like an outstanding person in addition to an outstanding player. Here’s hoping he’s happy, and made the “best” choice for him.

Racers!

When were you at MSU?

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

1 Year Overlap

I started Fall 96 and graduated Spring 00. Lived 2 years in the basement of good old Richmond Hall and then two years in my fraternity house.

Four years in Elizabeth College for me

I was RCC president there my senior year. I was one of like four people on MSU’s campus that didn’t “Go Greek.” :)

He was injured

I don’t think any discussion about this transfer should be conducted with out referance to his health. He had the kind of injury that is slow to recover from but somehow made in back in a suprisingly short time. He turned our season around and we would not have made it to the tournament with out him. But after he came back he admitted his quickness and jumping ability was effected. I don’t think he ever got that back. BCG makes a distinction between being hurt and being injured. If Jasper feels like he never got the time he needed to heel completely then he may have envisioned the same senerio this year. Bottom line, if he hadn’t gotten injured last year I don’t think we would be having this discussion.

Jasper Wants To Play PG

That’s a primary reason (I think) why he is transferring.

by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 1, 2008 7:02 PM EDT   0 recs

really?

We have this huge need for a point (lead) guard, and its his for the taking. Honestly, he’s the most qualified of all the remaining guys on the team, and of the new guys. (Liggins might be more talented than Jasper, but Liggins won’t have 1+ year of experience in Billy’s system.)

I don’t see why Jasper leaves because he wants to play PG. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

I would like to put this issue to rest..

it is finally done, kaput.

No one except DG and Coach know the true reasons. It is time to go forward.

I Think So

Jasper would not play PG in 2009 or 2010 if Liggins qualifies.

Good/Bad Decision

Opinions are like a-holes… everyone has one and so do I. First off I want to say I appreciate the work Jasper put in for our Cats; especially this last year working through an injury that has ended the hopes of other players. Secondly, that work does not make him always a Wildcat. No hard feelings and I wish the kid the best, but his choice is made and it is to finish his college career for another school.

I think he has made a decision more with his heart than his mind. For his future this is more than likely a bad decision. Running the point for UK would get him more exposure than he will ever get for a team like UNLV (IF that’s where he ends up). He is not a show stoppper type guard who can get national attention on his play alone. No disrespect to other programs but playing for UK in the SEC will get respect even if your numbers are not outstanding. Jasper does not put up those numbers but his play and the things that do not go in the books will go unnoticed if he is not in the eye of the sports world.

His heart is in another place and I hope he can find a way to make that work for him but he has greatly reduced the odds of that happening. It is a big loss to UK and the team will have to find ways to work around it and they will. In the end I would rather not have the team ran through a player who does not have his head in the game. A lesser player who is devoted to the team can get more done than one who is torn as to why is is here.

Transfers FROM Kentucky Often Do NOT Wind Up In A Better Place

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/playertransferfromuk.html You can see the list here. Most (not all) do worse, or do no better, at their new school. Some (few) excel at the new school but not very many.

UK is not for everyone. And vice versa.

Derrick Jasper

I did not want him to transfer. However, he has done so. Let us drop the subject.

Does anyone even care that we have Mason County’s Darius Miller? This kid is good.

One man does not make a team. The closest I have seen to that is Kobe Bryant and even he cannot do it alone. We will prevail and with all our “homesickness” over and difficulty determining where Kansas is on the map or whatever Liggins’ problem is, we will still win. We will have a better season than last year.

I am glad that Barnhart and Gillispie did not bend over to make Jasper stay and I wish him the best unless-as stated above-he plays against us.

by craggycat on Jun 2, 2008 12:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Miller

I think most UK fans are excited to see if Gillispie can identify the good in-state players from the not-so-spectacular. (I think most people would say that has been a problem in the past for Kentucky coaches.)

Miller seems to be the real deal, but the reason you won’t see his name come up in all these Jasper conversations is because he brings a different skill set to the table. Galloway and Liggins both bring the ballhandler skill-set. Any discussion on point production for next year will eventually turn to Miller, especially when it comes to the wing positions.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
