OPEN SHOT: Around the Big Blue Nation
Not that much going on out there right now as far as big stories go, but here are a few things to talk about:
- Joe Crawford impressive at NBA pre-draft camp. Ramel Bradley not so much.
- I like these tidbits from John Clay, particularly the ones about Noah and Bobby Petrino.
- KSR has lots of stuff today. Check it out if you haven't. Looks like Jasper is about to be officially released.
- The SEC coaches voted 9-3 to add an early signing period in football, a 180 degree reversal from last year.
- Coming soon to theaters near you -- Saban Rule II -- The Video. Recruiting by videoconference -- the next recruiting practice likely to be banned.
- The SEC coaches hate the "one and done" rule.
- Finally, John Clay asks, "Who was Mitch Barnhart's best coaching hire?" Vote in the poll below.
Much more on UK baseball's regional game in Ann Arbor, Michigan later today, including a Q&A with Dave of MaizeNBrew , SB Nation's Michigan Wolverines blog.

some exciting news
tru, didn’t know if you heard or not but on the Tennessean they have a headline that says SEC may be developing its own network. This will be good for us non Kentucky residents. We can see some Kentucky games on TV that aren’t picked up by CBS or ESPN.
Great news!
I live in Big Ten country and have the Big Ten network. I would gladly pay extra to my Satellite company if they would remove this channel from my options before I have to witness another Northwestern-Minnesota battle in any sport. The only game worth watching in any sport from that conference is OSU-Michigan and thats nationally televised anyway.
SIgn me up for the SEC network please!
UK has the greatest fans in the world!
I had ...
... those articles in my newsfeed yesterday.
Interesting stuff.

SEC network
If it’s like the Big10 network it will be a good chance to see some of the lesser shown sports like Track and Field, Swimming, Volleyball, etc. I’d love to see Derrick Locke in some of his track meets.
Best Hire
I dont see how anyone can vote for Billy G as Barnharts best hire to date. There just isnt enough data to make that ascertion yet. In terms of on field/court success I say Brooks is clearly the best hire to date. You could also make a stronger case for Cohen over Billy G as well. I think Billy G may end up being his best hire but as of right now the answer is no.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
I voted for Brooks too...
but I think Billy G should be in the discussion, even this early. The simple fact that he has created so much buzz about the basketball program so quickly says a lot about his hiring. His success is still to be determined, but on the recruiting trails Kentucky has once again asserted itself as an offer you must once again consider.
Still not a crook!
Cohen ...
... got my call.
Baseball was even more futile than football before he got here.
Gillispie’s votes are no surprise. UK is a basketball school, and basketball still gets most of the love, deserved or potential.

big10 network is awful
I missed part of the big10 baseball tournament to watch “greatest games, motor city bowl 2007, purdue vs central michigan”
right before that they showed individual school programming: Purdue Vet School Diaries – Large Animal Hospital.
Their regional directors (each school has its own production crews) vary. I hear Michigan’s is awful. I hear Wisconsin’s is great.
I’m sure the SEC would learn from the Big10 mistakes and realize they need to network it through one of the big channel names already. Comcast and Time Warner refuse to carry big10 network on regular cable throughout the Midwest. I only happen to get it because I use RCN Chicago, one of the smaller cable companies trying to gain customers from comcast.
Where’s the other half of Maizenbrew’s Q&A?

I Voted For Gillispie
Because most UK fans (not all) wanted a change, better or worse didn’t matter.
I’m not a Brooks fan. DeMoss left. Cohen probably had the most success (so far).
Gillispie has a lot to prove whether (or not) he’s a UK caliber coach.

Gillispie here..
but I did consider Brooks.
And yes Coach BCG has a lot to prove, but I think he’s on the right track.
He is ...
... and I think he will get there.

His 2008 Coaching In SEC
Was very impressive. He’s on the right path but so were Tubby and Sutton.

Remains To Be Seen
Hall was 34-21 his first 2 years. Sutton 50-15. Pitino 36-20. Tubby 63-13.
Gillispie is 18-13 after 1 year. He must average 27-8 the next 9 years to TIE Tubby.
Or Pitino might be a better comparison. He started 14-14, then was 205-36 the next 7 years. Gillispie must average 29-5 the next 7 seasons to tie Pitino.
Tough road ahead.

I really do appreciate..
all the stats you post here…honestly.
But could you just give the person that truly loves UK sports and does not know all these stats a little breatheing room?
I will admit it is a tough road for our new Coach, but I still have faith in him.
If I Were U
I’d say this.
The better 2 of those 4 coaches (Pitino, Hall) both started slow.
The other 2 of those 4 coaches (Tubby, Sutton) both started fast.
Hall 20-8 in 1973. Pitino 14-14 in 1990. Sutton 32-4 in 1986. Tubby 35-4 in 1998.
Gillispie has shown he is an exciting recruiter. He showed good coaching mettle in the 2008 SEC competition. But he has a lot to prove to show he is a UK caliber coach.

Dear FortyYear...
I am not here for the past.
I am here for the present and future.
Keep your stats coming, I love em!
The Past Often Predicts The Future
Hall started slow, finished better.
Sutton started fast, finished bad.
Pitino started slow, finished best.
Tubby started fast, finished slow.
Notice the trend?
by FortyYearCatFan on May 30, 2008 7:43 PM EDT reply actions
How can you ...
... create a “trend” out of three completely disparate pieces of data several decades apart?
C’mon, Forty. That’s not a “trend” by any reasonable definition.
