Notes from the press conference 5/10/2008
Nothing earth shattering here. The big news is that Jasper has pretty much decided to leave. It should be finalized this week.
Other tidbits:
- Williams has been granted an unconditional release, which we knew.
- Meeks is progressing nicely from his surgery
- Patterson is out of his cast. Doctors are encouraged by his progress. He will be in a walking boot for 4-6 weeks.
Those are the most interesting details. More details to follow later.

Youngsters
I think the main point of this presser was to respond a bit to all the gruff UK has gotten on Avery. Of course BCG could not discuss the player specifically, but he made his case for the recruitment in a roundabout way.
The rest was housekeeping news. Avery was the impetus IMO.

Absolutely...
I thought coach’s perspective was quite interesting. He basically said that these early commitments actually benefit the players by making the family the decision makers instead of the media, coaches, etc. Thus making it less likely for the kid to be taken advantage of and used for profit.

Aw, Jasper. Not surprising, but still. Sadness. I really hate to see him go, we’ll miss him like crazy this coming season.
Have to admit that I’m a little glad Williams is going, nothing against him, but just to free up the scholarship space. Is that wrong of me?!?
Good news on Meeks and PPat.

No Way
Thats not wrong of you. If Mike isnt going to able to contribute here he needs to go somewhere he can and it’ll be good for both him and the university. It’s going to be wierd seeing Jasper in another jersey in a couple of years though. I wish him well but cant really see myself rooting for him on the college level again.

This is my first post. I started reading here 3 months ago. Simply the best site for Cat fans that I’ve seen. And I too hate to see Jasper leave but we’ll survive.

Save 2 (Jasper And Williams) Scholarships For 2009 Class
Give them to Coury and maybe Slone this season.

I believe ...
they have all been tied up now, except for Jasper’s. I say we save that one for 2009. Jon Hood took the Williams scholly for next year, if my math is right.

UK Has 11 Committed And 2 Open
F Miller, Harris, Patterson, Stewart, Stevenson – C Carter, Harrellson – G Meeks, Porter, Liggins, Galloway.
The 2 open are Williams and Jasper. If they transfer, Coury and Slone could get 1 year scholarships. Or UK could sign 1 or 2 more recruits in 2008 class. Or take a transfer.
U R correct – Hood has a scholarship that would come from Williams or Jasper leaving.
A trend for schools is to have their Jr recruits graduate a semester early and enroll in December. Can Hood or Vilarino do that? I don’t know.

Hood or Villarino ...
... could do that, but I haven’t seen the trend of which you speak regarding JUCO’s. Where do you get the idea that is a trend?
If any of the walk-ons get to borrow a scholarship, I would surely prefer it to be Coury. He has most certainly earned it.

Not JuCo Recruits
But HS Jrs who graduate early (mid term) in Sr year.
Darnell Wilks did that at Cincy. Some guy did it at Southern Calif a couple of years ago.

Yeah ...
... you do see that occasionally, but I wouldn’t call it a trend. I think Bill Walker did that also for K-state.

didn’t ramon harris do the same thing? i thought he came in at the end of december and started playing….i always thought it was a waste of a scolarship year since he didn’t actually play much in the half-season he was available.

Harris Was 2006 HS Class
He took his test in the fall so he could qualify for Dec 2006 admission to UK.

Trend, Maybe Not (Yet)
But I think you’ll see more and more of it.
Walker was an outstanding HS student with near 3.5 GPA so he graduated early rather easily.

Jasper & Member
Again, mega-bummers that Jasper is leaving – the team really needed him. But if he is the kind to abandon his teammates over some homesickness… Ah well. So goodbye to my favorite player. Time to pick a new favorite I guess!
And best of luck and success to the Member.

UK Averages 1+ Transfer Per Year Going Back To The 1940's
http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/playertransferfromuk.html Jasper and Williams are just the latest. Wish them luck. There’ll be other Cats.

Coach
is supposed to make his last pitch to Jasper on Wed. I`d really like him to stay, but FortyYear is right, there will be other Cats. Best of luck to him if he leaves.
