Vandy's win

I am conflicted about Vandy's win over the Vols last night.

On one hand: Takes some of the sting out of the whipping we took there

On the other hand: It severely weakens our position in the SEC.

A Vandy loss would have probably secured the Cats the 2nd best record in the SEC...Some thing I wouldn't have dreamed of a couple of months ago.  With their win we have a chance to play to win the SEC:Unbelieveable.

But if we don't win at Tenn and still go 3-1 we are looking at a probable (Vandy can win out hanging an L on Miss St. along the way) 3-way tie for second that we lose all the tie-breakers in...Thats a Fourth place finish.

So how do you feel about it?  Was the bird in the hand worth more than 2 in the bush?  Would you trade a secure 2nd place finish for a shot at 1st knowing that not finishing 1st meant finishing 4th?

Factoid-like substance about Vandy
If you look at Vandy's schedule, you'll notice some interesting things.  They've played a lot of home games, but have a poor road record.  Their effectiveness is much, much greater at home where the HCA works so much in their favor.  I have serious doubts about that road trip to Arkansas they have coming up.

Vandy is pretty good...
Yes, They have played a lot of home games...but those road losses were to UK, Tenn, Fla and Miss..Not exactly cupcake losses.  Arkansas can beat them, but they are going to have to play the way they did a few weeks ago, not the way they are playing now....I'll be rooting for them, thats for sure.

hmm
I hadn't thought about it that way.  I was rooting for Vandy last night (yuck, horrible experience, that) thinking only about our position vis-a-vis Tennessee--that we'd be within a game of the lead.  But duh, I hadn't really considered the tie possibility, and how it might be better for us for Vandy to lose, even more than Tennessee...oh, I'm getting a headache trying to contemplate all this.  I really, really suck at math.

Vandy losing at Arkansas--that does seem like a definite possibility, though.  Pelphrey really needs to knock them off for us.

Yikes
I'd like to say that I saw the Arkansas win coming out of some great b-ball expertise, but that'd be a ridiculous lie.  Congrats to Kentucky for having some pressure taken off their conference standings.

Record/Standings
If Kentucky finishes 12-4 in the SEC I think they get in The Big Dance regardless of what place they finish.

The SEC Tournament will be greatly impacted by where they finish, though.

Finish 1st, get a bye, play winner of W4 v E5
Finish 2nd, get a bye, play winner of W3 v E6
Finish 3rd, play W6, then W2.
Finish 4th, play W5, then W1.

Bingo!
On the money Ken. Finish out of second overall and we have an uphill battle in the SEC tourny.

The Vandy win had
one other negative effect. It helps dUKe and UNC in the top 25 and NCAA seeding hunt. Damn ACC homers.

Yep
I hadn't even thought of that...However, I don't think that loss will cost them a #1 seed. Now, If we hang an L on them...thats a different story.

Heres to a #2 seed for Tennessee!

I was for Vandy all the way.....
I never go into any season hoping that Kentucky finishes second!  I always want them to win the East and hopefully the SEC and NCAA, no matter how good or bad they are. (note:  want and expect are 2 different things)  If Kentucky has a chance at winning the East I ALWAYS want that possibility!  I would never hope for someone else to win so UK has a better chance to finish SECOND.  If it means we end up 1st or 4th to do so, so be it!

I like the way you think.
Even as a UT fan, I think UK fans should root for the highest possible outcome.  As one professor of mine put it, you "risk perfection".
