Btn_book_medium

It's the last day of 2008, five days and counting until the next edition of the Dream Game.  Many may have forgotten, but we are only 2 days, 8 hours and some change away from the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

And now, the news:

Star-divide

Dream Game news

  • Jerry Tipton reports on Michael Porter's improving comfort level.  Patterson is quoted as saying, "It's all about confidence."  That young man is wise beyond his years (or perhaps he reads A Sea of Blue)

Liberty Bowl News

  • Chip Crosby takes a look at the seasons of both UK and ECU.
  • Already reported everywhere, but worth a read if you haven't seen it -- Dickie Lyons channels Elvis.
  • A touching story from the Memphis Commercial-Appeal about Chris Mosby, a Kentucky recruit from Memphis who was killed in an automobile accident before he made it to the Bluegrass.
  • The Commercial-Appeal notebooks the Liberty Bowl.
  • Jodie Demling says the UK defense is finally healthy.  It will be the first time we have seen our defense at 100% since the Louisville game.
  • Good piece form the Winston-Salem Journal, mostly about ECU but with some nice words for UK.
  • John Clay says that UK and ECU have a history, and it isn't a particularly friendly one.  Seems we pulled a buy-out on the Pirates, and they were less than amused.  Given the situation (opening an new stadium), I can see why.  John also has the funniest line of the day, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinal's Mike Bianchi.
  • We Is Notre Dame handicaps the Liberty Bowl.
  • Mark Maynard says a bowl win can make the 2008 'Cats memorable.

UK Basketball News

  • Some New Years' resolutions for the 'Cats in 2009.
  • Matt Jones quashes rumors about a disgruntled Darius Miller leaving the team, plus lots more.
  • In a similar vein, John Clay asks, "What's up with Darius Miller?"

NCAA Basketball news

  • Arkansas drills the #4 Oklahoma Sooners behind former UK recruits Rotnei Clarke and Courtney Fortson.
  • The Illini defeat the highly ranked Purdue Boilermakers.  Illinois is coming on strong, and Alex Legion had a good game.
  • Rush the Court checks in on the Big 12.
  • Gators win ugly over Stetson.
  • Darren Horn's Gamecocks fall short against in-state rival Clemson.

NCAA Football news

  • Is bowl season getting too crowded?
  • Oregon tops Oklahoma State in the Holiday Bowl.  The other bowls are going to have to really be impressive to top this one.  It was great.

Other news of interest

  • The Courier-Journal lauds Kentucky punter Tim Masthay.

I'm happy for the Arkansas Razorpelphries

With all the talk about the SEC having a down year, I think we’re getting ready to surprise them with strong seasons from Arkansas and Kentucky in addition to Tennessee and Florida. I had forgotten that Rotnei Clark ended up there, glad to see him doing well and taking it to Willie Warren.

I’d have to say that any worry about Miller is a bit premature. The kid is having a slump and looked visibly dejected on the bench because of it, that happens.

On the oblong ball subject, I’d like to see our defense come up strong in this game. If they can keep ECU around 10 points (entirely possible if healthy as advertised), I think Hartline and Co. can manage to wrangle up 14 points. Three bowl wins in a row would be a major accomplishment for this program.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Porter

I think he is starting to play much better. In the last 5 games, Porter has 24 assists and 9 turnovers….. that’s a big improvement.

Mississippi State lost at home yesterday

To San Diego (remember them?) in overtime.

Mississippi State started the season 5-0, but now they are just 8-5 on the season. They are really struggling.

They seem ...

… to have no offense at all.

I imagine Scotty Hopson could have been racking up some impressive numbers down there this year. Alas, he betrayed Stansbury.

In regards to the Darius Miller "rumors"....

I seriously doubt he would transfer. I am not privy to his thinking but he it would seem he is more frustrated with his play rather than with coach. Most freshman struggle with the adjustment from high school to college (some more than others). and Darius is struggling. I really don;t worry about him that much because I see alot of talent there. As Tru has mentioned several times, he just needs to settle down and just play rather than thinking too much. DM will probably turn out to be one of those “complimentary” players that can do alot of things on the court. Sort of in the vein of a Heshimu Evans (although he will probably be a starter at some point in his career). That is not to say he couldn’t be a main cog player at some point. He has too many tools not to be successful. I personally think he will be a better player than Landon Slone whether this season or next.

Mu Evans

6th man in 1998 but starter in 1999.

Loved Mu, love Darius.

A smart, well-spoken, clean-cut young guy who has two great parents, and is a Kentucky boy — what’s not to like? He will be great in time.

Miller

Miller had a lot of success in high school and did very well in AAU ball… He didn’t have to work very hard because of his size, talent and athleticism. Now he’s being pushed to work harder then he’s ever worked before and he’s being asked to do things that he’s not used to doing. It’s obviously been a big adjustment for him. I do think he’ll be fine in the long run, but I can understand his frustration. I hope he has a big game on Sunday. He really needs it.

by OGETARTS on Dec 31, 2008 12:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Miller

is definitely a starter by his junior year. Next year, with improvement, I can see him starting occasionally in Gillispie’s weird starting rotations, but once Porter, Meeks, Galloway, Stevenson, and Harris are gone, Miller should hopefully be a lock.

Michigan State is playing at Minnesota right now

It’s a good game.

MSU is up 30-29 at the half.

This was the first time I watched Minnesota play this year

The first half wasn’t bad, but in the second half, Michigan State really took control. They just have too much talent, too much athleticism and they killed Minnesota on the glass.

It’s hard to believe this is the same team that beat UofL 11 days ago…

MSU Is Very Good

Draymond Green originally committed to UK (early 2007) but wound up at MSU instead.

Tubby has Pitino’s number, name, and address lately.

Izzo STILL has Tubby's number

Too bad.

Mich St Is #1 Big 10 Team

They beat Texas recently. Spartans are very strong team.

I’m glad UK plays no one like that in conference play.

Mich. State

Got killed at home by UNC. Of course UNC is going to kill a lot of ppl but I didn’t expect that against Mich. State. I think either MIchigan or Illinois wins the Big 10.

by daniel81 on Dec 31, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

As much as I hat to say it....

It is UNC and everyone else this year….they will be very hard to beat

UNC is loaded

But Williams is what Favre is to the NFL, overrated. There’s probably not a poster on this blog site that couldn’t have won at least one championship with the teams he has coached. If UNC ends up in a tight game in the tourney, I favor the other team if they have a halfway decent coach.

Maryland beat Mich State bad too

80-62 on a neutral court at the end of November. :o

SEC Has No One Like Mich St

Goran Suton was out earlier (injured) but has returned.

Michigan Got Beat By Wisky Today

Illinois is decent but won’t win B10.

The SEC gets its first 2 cracks of the bowl season today

Vandy will have its work cut out for them against BC’s defense. LSU gets to play GT’s crazy option attack that has befuddled alot of teams all season. Both are underdogs. Go SEC – do us proud!

Didn't go to work today

and picked up my new 46" TV (the first TV I’ve owned over 32"!). Perfect for all the college football and basketball through the weekend. Ahhhhhhhhh. 1080 is so nice.

I did the same on my first day

Now run out and get a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2008 4:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Already have the PS3. Tiger Woods 2007 (yeah, that needs to be updated too) looks like a different game now.

Can’t wait to watch my first Blu-Ray movie. Sounds like a nice task for tomorrow.

BluRay

I picked up IronMan and The Dark Knight on BluRay. Both spectacular.

That's a good win for Wisconsin

The Badgers shot 59% for the game…. not gonna lose very many when you shoot like that.

Oh I hate that :-)

Cards will be fired up for the Cats on Sunday.

I did not watch the game just saw the final score. Low scoring game for both teams…what was going on?

Pitino Lost ANOTHER Game In OOC Play

More and more, past his prime. L to WKU, Minny, and UNLV – none are powerhouses.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 31, 2008 8:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They lost to a team missing their point guard who is also their leading scorer (Wink Adams).

U of L looked terrible (They shot 30%). If not for them grabbing 15 offensive boards they would have been blown out.

I look for them to play better Sunday, but right now anyway, U of L is not a good team.

by Ken Howlett on Dec 31, 2008 8:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I Still Enjoyed It

Louisville begins with L after all.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 31, 2008 9:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Looking ahead...

Gee, any chance they might have been looking past the Runnin’ Rebs and thinking about Sunday? Don’t get me wrong, I love to see UL lose, but they’re gonna be fired up now for the Cats. Oh well, whatever will be… Go Big Blue! Go Cats! Let’s give Pitino and his birds one more OOC loss.
