Opinions on whether Slone might transfer
This is pure hypothesizing, but here goes. Let's say Slone continues to play 20-25+ minutes per game the rest of the season, putting up 6-10 points and 3 or 4 assists in 3/4 of those games. That's very solid production out of any freshman at any school. Maybe he gets a few starts in there. Would UK offer him a scholarship for next year, and more to the point, would we even have a scholarship available?
If not, I wonder if any other D1 schools might come knocking at his door with a scholarship in hand. Any chance he would transfer?
*** Of course there is no way to know what his numbers will continue to be or whether his PT will continue. This is a bit premature after 2 solid games, but. . .

No way...
If you remember he turned down several scholarship offers to come walk-on at UK. He will remain at UK scholarship or not, though if he continues with his current output, or even a percentage of it, there is no doubt in my mind he’ll be awarded with a scholarship.

UK Should Have Offered Him a Scholarship THIS Year
Instead it was granted to Donald Williams late in the summer.

Agreed
There may not be a scholie for him next year, but the year after when we lose Perry, Ramon, Jodie, Harrelson, Galloway, and Patterson (possibly) there should definitely be something available for his last couple of years. Much like Cameron Mills.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Mills, Masiello, Braddy, Coury
All received scholarships at some point.
Moss was on academic scholarship all 4 years.

NO WAY
He’s a Kentucky boy that is living our his childhood dreams. Plus, he has seen that his coach will reward hard work, and that kid really works hard out on the court….

I agree also.
Slone loves the UK Wildcats and reveres being able to wear that jersey and play for the team and his fans in Paintsville.
He will be a Wildcat forever. Hopefully he will get a scholly somewhere down the line as he surely deserves it.

It appears we have agreement. I think he'll stay too, no matter what, BUT
my main point was that IF he continues to produce like the last 2 games (last night especially), I think this is more than most thought he was capable of as a freshman at ANY school. I know he turned down scholarship offers to walk on at UK, but if SOMEHOW he continues production like last night, he might find scholarship offers from major D1 schools. That changes things from where he was in high school.

Two more points
1. As far as I can tell, his scholarship offers came from Georgetown College and Marshall. Not exactly that tempting when you have a chance at UK, even as a walk on. A scholarship offer from a better school could change things.
2. This is just funny – as I was trying to track down the scholarship offers for him, I came across a post someone left on another message board in March (around the time he committed to walk on). How you like them apples now?
“Slone isn’t going to contribute anything to Kentucky. Giving him a roster spot is just a gift for him because he won’t do anything nor will he ever play.”

The only thing I would say...
…and I’m not gonna’ try to guess what the guys thinking, but if he stays at UK throughout his college career, he will be set for life in this state…

Judging from his words ...
… I doubt anything could pry him away from here.

Absolutely – Slone will stay.
Slone is a KY basketball kid. Wearing a Cats Uniform is an honor for him. I don’t think he’d leave UK no matter WHO offered him a pass (D1 or no D1). I predict he’ll play even better by seasons end (Coach G really believes in him) and he’ll be on a scholarship next year.

No way
Slone won’t be on scholarship for next season for all the reasons discussed above.
We’re already committed to 3 scholarships and only one person is graduating. Rumors say Donald Williams is giving up his schollie after this season, but that still leaves us one short of the scholarships we have promised out already.
As I said, there should be one open for him the year after next.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I thought Williams was for one year only.
Still don’t understand that decision by Coach. Has the guy even played?
by kykat51 on Dec 31, 2008 5:13 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Williams has not played yet
He may redshirt.
by OGETARTS on Dec 31, 2008 5:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Gillispie was asked about Williams and a redshirt a week or so ago on the call-in show
Gillispie said that no decision had been made yet. He said he didn’t want to burn a year of eligibility for him if there was no real chance that he would play and contribute and that there were just a lot of people ahead of him on the depth chart.
I don’t think he’ll see the court this year, and then I think he’ll transfer somewhere he can play next year freeing up his scholarship for an incoming freshman.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Actually..
I’m from Eastern KY and my old high school is in the 15th Region the same as Slone’s old high school More to the point, the father of my boss is best friends with Slone’s grandfather and she told me that they were just going to see how his playing time went. If he did get some playing time then he’d stay but that if he rode the bench all the time then he’d most likely transfer to Georgetown(KY) at the end of the season.

Most UK Walk-Ons See Lots Of PT (Pine Time) As Frosh
Cameron Mills almost never played in 1995 season.
I’d hope he gives it (at least) 2 years to see what happens.

Gillispie has a history of playing walk-ons
They usually see decent minutes and have lots of opportunities under Gillispie. Mark Coury started last year and Kerry Benson was seeing some action before he left the program.
At Texas A&M, Chris Walker, a walk-on and now on the UK staff, started and had a big role on the team.

I hope..
that he stays no matter what. Playing for UK is a dream for any KY kid. I was just saying what I heard through friends of the family.

Thanks.
That’s good to know, and honestly, if he did transfer I would understand. But I sure hope he stays. I think he can help UK a lot — he sure has helped so far.
