Appalachian State @ Kentucky: Open Game Thread
Appalachian St. Mountaineers at Kentucky Wildcats, Dec 20, 2008 12:00 PM EST
This is the official A Sea of Blue open game thread for the Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Kentucky Wildcats basketball game at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Saturday @ 12:00 PM.
Particulars of this game are as follows:

Once again, UK finds itself matched up against a foe it aught to defeat easily. Last year in their annual pilgrimage to the River City (at which, by the way, I was in attendance), the Wildcats blew a substantial lead to lose to the UAB Blazers, sparked by a dazzling show of 3-point shooting by Robert Vaden.
The Mountaineers bring in their own star in the form of big man Ike Butts. Butts has had double-doubles in almost every game this year, so he is going to be option #1 on offense, and our post defense must rise to the challenge. In addition, the Mountaineers like to run up and down the floor very much in the style of VMI, and we all know how we did against them.
Nevertheless, ASU is significantly smaller (outside of Butts) and less talented than Kentucky, as you would expect. Despite the uneven performance last week against the Indiana Hoosiers, we have seen what can happen when Kentucky is intense and into the game. A few minutes of that, and the Mountaineers could find themselves in the same kind of hole IU did, or worse.
Five things UK needs to do to win:
- Intensity. If UK can raise their intensity to IU first half levels, the Mountaineers will collapse.
- Control the tempo. UK wants the tempo high, but not as high as ASU. The 'Cats need to control their urge to get into a track meet with this team.
- Get Patterson more looks. I don't care how they do it, there is no excuse today. ASU is not going to zone us, most likely, so Patterson should touch the ball a lot.
- Play under control. Too many times, this team has gone into a weird kind of purposelessness on offense.
- Take care of the defensive glass. ASU is an outstanding rebounding team on both ends.
Five things UK can do to lose:
- Start slow. A slow start has hurt us every time we have had one.
- Too many threes. We need to take some, but this team's bread is buttered inside the free throw line.
- Fail to get the ball into the lane. Our guards have been very inconsistent at putting pressure on teams by getting into the lane.
- Allow open three pointers. ASU is not a great 3-point shooting team, but teams can get hot from out there. Just ask Miami.
- Relax. UK can't afford to relax. Ever.
This is another game UK should win convincingly. The Mountaineers aren't bad, but they lack the overall size and talent to be competitive with Kentucky over 40 minutes unless Kentucky just fails to fire. Make no mistake, that is a possibility -- we have been unprepared to play a time or two this year, and it has hurt us.
But I don't expect that. This team is beginning to show some signs of maturity and increasing confidence, and that is the team I expect to see in The Hall today.
Go 'Cats!

Everyone is playing well...
Patterson has missed some he should’ve hit, but other than that it’s hard to criticize anyone

The big guy he is playing against is pretty decent...
He’s doing a good job against Patterson, and it’s not due to a lack of effort on Patterson’s part.

we’ll find out soon enough if Tru has been an extra good boy this year.
Hmmm, will Santa give him what he wants??? ; )
Oh, I know...
….I think this is like the second time this year he has outscored the opponent at the half. Ridiculous, I love it!

anybody have a link other than ESPN360 ?
Nice
Tuned in late, but Porter was looking really good on offense – that’s great to see. Great D by all, and JODIE IS BACK, BABY!
Meeks
Great recruit for UK in 2006 class. Florida really wanted him.
by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 20, 2008 1:09 PM EST reply actions
that being said...
…when are we gonna’ start hearing about Meeks on a national level…???
All we ever hear about is Patterson… It’s about time Meeks gets his due…
just asking
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
He's a great catch and shoot guy
But has limited ability to make his own shot and is not very tall. I just can’t see him as a lottery pick. But could make an NBA squad as a niche off the bench shooter.

Meeks
He isnt short for his position just of average height. He has the physical tools to do the job at the next level and while he doesnt drive to the hoop all the much he can get that mid range jumper off on his own anytime he wants. IF his game continues to progress I see him as a mid to late first round pick. As far as national attention he hardly played last season and only averaged 8 ppg his freshman year. We at UK knew he would be a scorer but I dont think anyone saw him averaging more than 20ppg. He will garner some attention next season.

Harrellson is struggling...
… But Stewart is incredible

Galloway loves pushing the ball...
…such a good passer. Just a great instinct for where to put the ball
We might get 20 turovers if we keep this up.

… But we sure do pass it well.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
That how it's supposed to be...
…when UK plays this caliber team (no offense to them, they played hard). All the games up to UofL should go like this. Great play, great effort. The periods of faltering are getting fewer and fewer.
The post mortem ...
… will come in a little while. I’m watching me some U of L-Minnesota.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I went to the game Thursday....
and Ole Miss should of, or coulda, won…btw Miss. St. has a long way to go, at least I thought so
What channel?
What channel is it on for you guys? I couldn’t find it… Looks like Tubby is winning – go Tubby!
2 little things that many may overlook...
…The fact that Stevenson not only shot the open 3, but looked good doing it hitting 1 of 2…
Plus, Stewart starting to show more confidence in his offense…
Those two things will be BIG in the SEC…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
I know, whoa
This is superexciting! Go Tubby!!

Louisville hasn't looked like a Top 10 team to me yet this year.
They’re having issues with their guards.
by BBallSophist on Dec 20, 2008 4:22 PM EST up reply actions
Go Tubby!
Great to see Tubby having success in his new home! If he stays there 10 years I bet he’ll make a final four. Good coaching.
Imagine ...
… the hair-pulling around here if he does get UM to a final four after he failed to do so with UK since 1998. :-)
To be fair, but for a couple of bounces and a ridiculously hot player, he would have done it here, too.

FF In In 2010 Or 2011
The Gophers add lots of talent in their 2009 recruiting class and lose only 2 little used players from this year’s team.
I think FF in 2010 is possible and NC contender in 2011.
by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 20, 2008 6:30 PM EST up reply actions
UK
He had the players to do it here 2-3 times and the breaks just didnt come his way.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
Breaks Are A Big Factor
UK caught breaks in 1975 (Scott May injury) and 1984 (Regional games in Rupp Arena) that helped them make FF, just like the 1958 team played its NCAA in Lexington (2) and Louisville (2) that year.
by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 22, 2008 7:04 PM EST up reply actions
I did.
Smith has an excellent track record against Pitino, and giving him ten days to prepare and a leg-weary Cardinal team is a recipe for a Gopher victory.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Simply put
…anyone finding negatives with this game is just looking for misery.
The best tip to horn performance by UK since Gillispie has been here? Maybe.
Obviously the stakes not as high as a UT or UF, but that first half was beautiful hoops.
