Looking toward January . . . a change in the lineup?

LG Liggins (backup Galloway)

SG Meeks (Backup Porter)

SF Miller (Backup Harris unless foul shooting and offense improves)

PF Matt Pilgrim (Backup Perry Stevenson) Would that be interesting!

C Patrick Paterson (Backup Josh Harrellson)

I know, it makes 10 deep players, but it permits a number of combinations and gives a lot of experience for each team member. Add the three new recruits to this group who would already have had a chance to learn to play together (cut down on the guffy number of turnovers) and it could be a final four team.

Are you looking to January or next Fall?

Because Pilgrim won’t be available until then.

Personally, I’m looking no further than tonight. There’s a lot of games to be played between now and January.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I never even officially heard that he DID apply

He did.

It’s possible, I suppose, that it could be granted. But even if it is, it’s not clear Gillispie would play him this year.

Waste of a year of eligibility IMO

Much like Ramon Harris wasted a year of eligibility for 3 minutes of playing time in January two years ago.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Harris

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/Players/Harris_Ramon.html Played 12 games and 32 minutes in 2006-07 season. Not 3 minutes PT.

Harris CHOSE not to redshirt. He was given the option.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 3, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

32 minutes (i don't think chirop literally meant 3 minutes)

still a waste of a year of eligibility, even if it was his choice.

Apply

Billy G has stated that an application has been made. No word on the result. Assume he is not playing. At this point I think it would take him a while to work himself into the roster anyway.

Pilgrim

He won’t play this year. Not eligible.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 3, 2008 4:08 PM EST reply actions

I disagree. I think Pilgrim would help us this year and would start

ahead of any PF/C except Patterson. If it has been determined that the NCAA has rejected his application for a waiver, then it is a moot question. However, if the ruling is still up in the air, playing this year may be his best bet. Next year, as a senior, he might be second string.

On a more important note, has anyone heard anymore about how Ramon is doing?

by Blueobsessed on Dec 3, 2008 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Ramon is doing fine...

Getting some test run, but the reports are that he is fine… (Relatively speaking that is)

As for Pilgrim, he would not be a senior next year; he has 3 years of eligibility

Harrelson

What kind of idiot is Gillespie? Harrelson was the ONLY one who played with any kind of intensity and focus in the first half yesterday, and then he gets benched for the 2nd half? PLEASE — sports commentators have noticed Harrelson’s play, the fans appreciate his contributions, and Gillespie puts all of his focus into Liggins and Miller. Liggins played much better yesterday, but Miller is not ready for the prime time yet!

Stevenson ...

… is a better defensive player. I thought Josh should have seen more minutes, too, but Stevenson played well defensively, particularly in the second half.

But I agree that sitting Harrellson the whole half is questionable.

Tru. Harrellson has surprising similar stats to Stevenson given his considerable less PT.

Look at the number of blocks Harrellson has accumulated. Very interesting stats. I do think Perry has developed into a great free throw shooter, but he is tenative with his 12 footer.

Yes ...

… But those stats may only look that good because of the lesser playing time.

Stevenson is a much better defensive player, according to my eyes.

Just a young coach and still learning. The UK situation is on a very different planetary level than TAMU or UTEP.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 7, 2008 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

"UK situation"

At some point he stops getting a pass for that. The expectations at UK may be different, but coaching is coaching. In the words of the great Herm Edwards “You play to win the game.” I don’t care if its in the backwoods of Texas or under the lights in Rupp Arena. Its time to show the ability that made him a coach of the year finalist.

Must Beat RANKED Teams And NCAA Teams

Tubby beat 63 of 107 ranked teams. UK (all-time) is 243-163 vs ranked teams. Gillispie is 2-6.

Tubby beat 23 of 32 NCAA teams. UK (all-time) is 100-45 vs NCAA team. Gillispie is 0-1.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 9, 2008 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

Earlier predictictions for this team to win 27-28 too high. Unless we start playing as

a team rather than individual, we may not win 18 games. Next year, we will have even more talent and hopefully will have someone to take charge of the team while it is on the floor. Coach G cannot play the game for them. They have to play together. I like the offensive stats and free throw shooting, but the turnovers, lack of assists and offensive rebounds are killing us. I still don’t see recognizable offensive plays, just individual on-on-one moves.

by Blueobsessed on Dec 9, 2008 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Not So

This team can STILL win 27 or 28 games.

For example, 11-4 OOC and 12-4 SEC plus 2 or 3 W in SECT and 1 or 2 W in NCAA.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 9, 2008 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

This team is totally still capable of winning 27-28 games. I dont think anyone around here realizes how crappy the SEC is right now.

Forty. I have had to "eat crow" because of the accuracy of some of your predictions such

as a 8 man rotation, but I will be most surprised if we end up with 27-28 W this year. Even though our OOC schedule is relatively easy, we could loose another game or two to an experienced senior laden team that plays together. Losing only 4 in the SEC is really optimistic with having to play Georgia, Vandy Florida, Tennessee, Miss. State and South Car. in their gyms. Depending where this team is come SEC tournament time, they have enough talent to win it all or enough selfish play to lose in the first round. As for the NCAA, I see a 16th seed and us playing a number 1 seed and losing in the first round again. We must start playing as a team to meet your prediction. We will see.

by Blueobsessed on Dec 9, 2008 11:30 PM EST reply actions

there is no way UK gets a 16 seed

If we could go 12-4 with the team we had last year with no frontcourt depth and all the injuries, there’s a damn good chance to do it this year. No way Uk ever makes the tournament and gets that close to playing in the play-in game.

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!

by UKWildCatFanatic on Dec 10, 2008 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

If we don't start playing as a team and not selfish individuals not making the

tournament is entirely possible for this team. If we play like we did against VMI, we will lose to Indy or go 12-4 in the SEC. That is all I am saying. Crawford and Bradley woke up to the fact that team ball wins more games. I’m not so sure Meeks and Patterson have yet. Our supporting players are stronger than last year, but I see no other stars asserting themselves as leaders on this team. So like the unforgetables, they will have to find their style of play and play as a team.

On second thought, if we have another 18 W year, the NCAA could let us in and have us play Minn. who would beat us like a drum the way we are currently playing.

by Blueobsessed on Dec 10, 2008 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

Our RPI ...

… is likely to be fairly weak this year unless we can manufacture some wins against top competition. So far, the best win on our schedule is West Virginia, and they fell to a good Davidson team last night in a game they should have won.

This is why I am so upset about the Miami loss. It was an opportunity to make up some ground in the RPI, and help our case for the post-season. Normally we would have two more chances to do so, but this year, Indiana is too weak to help. Louisville is probably too tough for us to beat.

Which leaves a down SEC with maybe three teams that could have any positive impact on our post season chances. Playing an easy schedule like this is great if we pick up a couple of wins against top 25 competition and do well in the SEC. Now, failing a big upset against Louisville, our prospects are maybe not as dim as this time last year, but not tremendously improved, either.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Dec 10, 2008 7:01 AM EST up reply actions

Tru, the assumption is that we will do well in the SEC. We won't if we play

like we are currently. While talented,we are yet to play like a team. Most or all of the SEC could have beaten Miami and VMI, Indiana is not a lock for us, even in Rupp Arena. Tom will have his boys ready for a big win against us. We are in for a fight each game for a win. Liggins hasn’t played in Starkville yet. The talent is thereon our team, but just like Rondo and Bradley, we seem to have some oil and water. They just don’t seem to gel or don’t want to. IMHO here’s what I see needs to happen:

  • When Coach plays Stevenson get him the ball in a way he can be fouled. On defense help him out. He’s great leaper who gets pushed away from the ball and it cuts his productivity on the glass. Here is where Jasper helped.
  • When Coach plays Porter, help him protect the ball by being available for a pass when he gets in trouble. Help him out on defense. Screen for him on offense he is a great shot.
  • Help Harris on defense particularly rebounding. Let him shoot layups. Don’t let him get fouled. Talk on the court so he can get in position for offensive rebounds.
  • Someone talk to Liggins, be his friend on the court, help calm him down. Accept him as the PG. Ditto for Jodie, calm them down when there is pressure.
  • GET THE BALL TO PATTERSON. His missed shots look so much better than some other team member’s missed shots and there aren’t many of those.
  • When the subs come in accept them as intregal parts of the team. The dynamics of the team will change. Know the following. What does Harrellson bring to the table that Stevenson doesn’t? Use it. What does Miller bring? What does Galloway bring?
  • Finally, teamwork is not just a warm fuzzy- like group hug. It is an anintentional realization that every teammate can contribute something and also has weaknesses. You know a well coached opponent knows all 20 team member’s strengths and weaknesses. We need to recognize and embrace those as well. As a team accepting these strengths and weaknesses and playing to the strengths is a start toward real teamwork.

by Blueobsessed on Dec 10, 2008 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

All good points.

I think we are not playing all that bad right now, but we do need to step it up a notch, especially when it comes to consistency. We have put two halves together only once all year, and it’s time to deal with the inconsistent play we have been seeing lately.

But you’re right, if we don’t raise our level of play, we may struggle even against a weak SEC.

SEC

You will not see an SEC team like UK as the 16 seed.

DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

by davw83 on Dec 10, 2008 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

Definitely not a 16 seed.

Even if we didn’t win another game all year until the SEC tournament (and then won that to get the automatic bid), we wouldn’t get a 16 seed. The only teams that get 16 seeds are the tiny conference tournament champions that get automatic bids. Even in the above scenario, we’d get a 14 seed at worst.

by EEWildcat on Dec 10, 2008 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

Surprised, Maybe

But the SEC is down. 12-4 is very possible. 11-4 in OOC even more so. That’s 23-7 headed into SECT. 2 or 3 W there would be 25 or 26 W headed into NCAA. And 1 or 2 W there puts UK at 27 or 28 W level.

I cannot imagine UK lower than 12 seed in any case (ever) and more like 5 or 6 seed if the above occurs.

by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 10, 2008 6:47 AM EST up reply actions

I count 6 teams we could split with home and away, unless we change our playing style.

That should be easy since I certainly don’t think that style has been defined yet.
