Bobby Perry takes UK fans to task for cheering Porter's DQ
I think Bobby is right. The so-called UK fans cheering Michael Porter's disqualification on fouls in the Miami game were guilty of an abject failure of humanity and fandom.
I have been very hard on Porter's performance, but even harder on the coach for forcing him to play out of position. It just isn't right for this kid to have to take all these hits.
I really didn't know that happened, and I was so into the game it never dawned on me that was what was going on. Bu one thing's for sure -that's just loathsome behavior.
Sometimes we fans just plain make fools of ourselves in games, and this was one of those times. I hope everyone who participated is embarrassed. I sure am embarrassed for having to endure another hit to our reputation.

Bobby is my hero. You ought to know! A wonderful SF playing out of position as PF.
Hold you bloodied head high. You did the job although I would have loved to see us with a Patterson-like PF so you could have moved to SF. Crawford could have then moved to SG where he belonged.

Bobby Perry
Absolutely correct about UK fans booing Porter fouling out. Just like they booed Saul in 2001 when he replaced Cliff Hawkins (who had asked out of the game). Pathetic.
The PF in 2004 and 2005 was Chuck Hayes. Perry played WF both years.
Perry split time between PF and WF in 2006 and 2007. He broke Rodney Rogers’ (Durham Hillside) HS rebounding record so he was accustomed to both PF and WF.

Perry
was out of position as a power forward. He may have felt comfortable there but IMO he was more effective at wing. It wasnt anyone’s fault though. Much like Porter playing the point today there just wasnt anyone else on the roster more effective at that position at that time.

But He Wasn't PF Much Of The Time
Not at all in 2004 or 2005. And he often played alongside Sheray Thomas in 2006 and 2007.
He played some PF but not most of the time.

04 and 05
I wasnt refferring to his first two years just the last two.
Like I said he was the most effective player we had at the four spot his last two seasons but I think he belongs on the wing.

Same Reply
He played both WF and PF in 2006 and 2007.
Perry Stevenson and Sheray Thomas were PF in 2007. Sheray and Rekalin Sims were PF in 2006.
Bobby Perry was excellent in NCAA games vs UAB, UConn, and Kansas in 2006 and 07. He scored over 20 points each of those games. He played F (with Morris at C) in 3G offense in those games.

Absolutely pathetic...
I did not hear it on TV or radio…but I suppose that is the bad minority of UK fans, I sure hope so. I mean where do these crazy fans come from?…a disgrace to UK fandom.

Disgraceful
It is maddening that Coach Gillispie puts this poor kid in this position. My respect for Coach G has dropped a notch. The fans are just venting in the only way they can. Getcher head outcher hind-end, Coach

That is no way for "true fans"
To react! Especially at a nationally televised game. I tell them to stay home, as the real fans do not need their negativity.

I agree with that
One of the things that gets said a lot about good coaches in all sports is they put their players in positions where they have the best chance to succeed. Unfortunately for Porter, Gillispie hasn’t done that for him. Porter is no more a PG than he is a PF, but he’s trying his best and that’s all you can ask of him from a fan standpoint in that situation.

Stay home and throw stuff at the TV.

And yes Tru
I am venting now against those people that cheered when Porter fouled out and boo’d other things. I very rarely get incensed enough to post like this,,,but I am now. That is my beloved Cats team and I will not stand for that kind of behavior for anyone being at Rupp. It makes me sick to my stomach. End of rant.

I hate it when Kentucky Fans boo our own players
Whether it’s Porter or Hartline, I find it really disrespectful.

Thrown under the bus...
You know Tru is right. I recently said that I would no longer defend Porter and thought him out of place in a division one program. In retrospect, I am remorseful for that posting. He is playing out of position and taking a lot of hits for the performance of others as well. Yes, he isn’t the point guard we need, but he may very well serve a grander purpose as Liggins grows and matures into what we need at that position. I have learned not to post closed ended statements after tough losses as well.

Great comment.
Porter was never recruited with the idea he would play starting point guard on an SEC team, he just doesn’t have the athleticism, the ball handling skills or quite frankly, the confidence it takes to run that spot.
But he can serve spot duty there, and serve as a backup two guard. He isn’t a bad ball handler, he just doesn’t handle it well under the kind of intense defensive pressure the great and even good teams are bringing these days. Times have changed, and Porter just isn’t able to protect the ball on the dribble well enough to be the primary ball handler.
Like you, I have been hard on Porter, maybe a little too hard. But I have come to realize that he is not the guy to blame here. The guy at fault is the man in the suit. He has a much better player available for that spot, yet he constantly choses to put Porter in a position to fail.

I remember that point of the game
and I remember the cheering on TV, but kind of thought it was more for Liggins getting to come in than Porter fouling out, but I’m sure for some that was the intent. I don’t remember the situation being as obvious as some in the past such as the booing of Sheray, but I’m sure it was different live in Rupp than it was on TV. I have a lot of respect for Porter’s efforts and it’s a shame that he’s under the pressure of the situation he’s in. Hopefully, he’s strong enough not to take the stupidity of acts like that personally, but the other thing the bothers me is that it affects not only him but the morale of whole team and maybe more so than the individual.

At the Game
I was at the game.
It wasnt that loud. Unless you knew what was going on I think you could have totally missed it in the arena as well. It really was a minority of people.

Not the point of this article
But did anyone else question why he was still in the game with 4 fouls and so much time left to play? He fouled out with 16 minutes left.

I know I did ...
… in a comment after my post game analysis. Why did he let Porter foul out like that? I can only assume he lost track, or was stricken with temporary insanity.
In Billy’s defense, I know both happen to me sometimes. :-)

Same Way Dan Issel Fouled Out (Vs Jacksonville In 1970) With 10 Minutes Left
Sometime when they get that 4th foul, the sub doesn’t get into the game in time.
by FortyYearCatFan on Dec 12, 2008 10:57 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but ...
… it’s still bad coaching just to let a guy foul out like that. Forty suggests he couldn’t get the sub in quickly enough, but my recollection is that he had plenty of time to sub and just declined or forgot to do so.
Maybe there is a better reason that only Gillispie knows, but just leaving him in and letting him foul out like that didn’t make sense when it happened, and doesn’t make sense to me now.

Yeah
I think we kind of got used to Pitino and Tubby’s style where if a player picked up two in the first half he sat on the bench regardless of who it was. I was kind of waiting for Porter to get pulled in the first half but he continued to play even after the 3rd foul. I haven’t quite figured out Coach G’s style on this if he has one.
by cthom on Dec 12, 2008 3:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Unless
he was trying to make a point to Porter I really don’t know what he was doing. If Gillispie thinks he’s expendable, why start him? Doesn’t make sense to me either.

Trying to get Porter to defend without fouling
My theory is he was trying to teach Porter to defend and not make stupid, ticky-tack fouls. We’ll see if it worked the rest of the year.

Too much
As much as Porter does not belong at UK, he tries hard and deserves respect during the games… save the bantar and stuff for the blogs and water cooler.

He Belongs At UK (3-time Calif All-Stater)
Just not as starting PG. He wasn’t recruited to be that.
