SAGARIN, POMEROY, and RPI Ratings after 6 Games

For those who are interested, Kentucky’s current Sagarin and Pomeroy rankings, even with the losses to VMI and UNC, are higher than they were at any time last year.

Sagarin puts us at 34 in the country; we ended last year at 55 in his rankings.

Pomeroy puts us at 45; we ended last year at 55 in the Pomeroy as well.

The same is not true of the present RPI, where we are presently ranked at 62, having finished last year at 57.  This out of kilter RPI ranking is most likely because the year is so fresh and the RPI is so statistically rigid that the numbers just haven’t “gelled” yet.  For instance, Evansville is ranked 7th in the country with a record of 2-1, whereas Duke is ranked 16th at 7-0, and Louisville is ranked 129th at 2-0.  That will straighten out in a couple more weeks of games (but the RPI remains an inferior analytical and predictive tool).

Our RPI suffers from a Strength of Schedule ranking of 79, which will probably get worse before it gets better.  (Of course, starting the season 0-2 didn't help.)

RPI Power Ratings have us at 57.

We Ended 2006 And 2007 At #20 And #14 In KenPom Ratings

Many folks don’t consider those 2 UK teams worth a hill of beans.

Yeah, but what people hated was losing 7 games in the SEC two years in a row.

Our solid finish in the SEC last year at 12-4 was such an improvement that it made folks feel better about a mediocre year. I do not consider last year a “better” year than ‘06 and ’07, but of course with the coaching transition you have to accept it and move on. I don’t think even the unrepentant Tubby haters argue that last year was a good year.

The point is, we started this year a disappointing 0-2, but are already higher than where we ended last year, even after a solid 12-4 SEC tour. There’s room for optimism.

By the way, whom are you rooting for in the Minnesota-Louisville game?

How long before BCG agrees to play Minnesota?

I'm thinking Minnesota will get in this year.

Is it this year or next that Sampson plays?

Sampson

He alternates at C with Colton Iverson.

They need 23 W to get in. Their OOC schedule is too weak.

I'm routing for Minnesota...

If Louisville played the Iranian national team, and Ahmadinejad was their starting point guard, I’d be in the stands talking about , ’ieieiieiieieieiieieieiiieiei"….

I HATE LOUISVILLE..!

Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.

Minnnisota

I’d much rather see Tubby win than Pitino, especially if it means Louisville losing…

Tubby

He’s 26-14 at Minnesota. Not great but they were 9-22 the year before he arrived on campus.
