Hoosiers get just three years probation in addition to self imposed loss of one basketball scholarship (for current season) and recruiting restrictions (already "relaxed" for Tom Crean) for last seasons Kelvin Sampson fiasco. No post season ban. No additional or future scholarship loses despite NCAA adding "failure to monitor" charge.

I saw that

Ridiculous IMO. Indiana knew what they were getting when they hired him. If that doesn’t warrant a punishment to the university, I don’t know what does.

Sampson gets slapped with a 5 year “show cause” condition on his future employment at NCAA schools. Considering he’s with the Timberwolves now, I would just assume he’ll shoot for a pro job anyways though.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

No suprise

I knew they would get a pass.Even though they hired someone with a reputation for cheating, the NCAA does nothing.Funny, former IU President Brand is head of the NCAA now.But UK holds midnite madness a week early, had it cleared through the SEC,and Brand calls for “emergency legislation”.The NCAA is a joke, and thier bias is clear.

Indiana ...

… has no reputation for cheating, and no history of NCAA sanctions. That’s the biggest reason they got off so light.

Compared to many NCAA violations, I don’t think what Indiana did was all that awful. The biggest knock against them was that they hired a coach with a reputation of running afoul of the NCAA, and now the basketball program is in shambles.

All in all, I think they pretty much got what they deserved.

Exactly Right

UK was harshly punished in 1989 because it was the 4th such punishment in UK history.

IU got about what I expected.

Punishment fits the crime

I agree that the punishment is probably about right when you look at the facts of the violation.

What I would have liked to see is some sort of punishment specifically for hiring a coach with a history of violations and then having those exact violations repeated.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

What about Georgia and Harrick?

Did they get the proper punishment when Harrick was ousted from his position there? He was a known cheater (albeit a championship (UCLA) one) and yet GA still hired him. You see any similarities? Not in crimes per se but punishment and how it fits the bill.

Agreed

Harrick and Georgia is another fine example.

Personally, I think that a school should be able to hire who they want, but if that coach has a previous record of infractions… the new school should be held accountable for hiring a risky coach. Similar to the “Show Cause” they have slapped on Sampson now, but with some real teeth to punish the school in the event of another infraction.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

The Actions At Georgia Were More Serious (Academic Fraud, Paying $ To Players) Than IU

Harrick was a known cheater at UCLA (he was coach when Natalie was there, so I have NO doubt) and Rhode Island.

Right. So do you feel that Georgia

got what they deserved? Did they get the proper punishment?

Do you feel Indiana got what they deserved hiring a known cheater also. Even with the lower form of infractions was the punishment correct in your opinion?

Yes To Both

What Georgia did was worse than what IU did.

They "did" get a post season banned....

…All their players left, they’ve lost the last 2 by a combined 64 points… lol Oh yea, they got the banned alright. Not even NIT will take a team with a losing record…

On a serious note, The thing that pisses me off here is that Indiana knew what kinda person they were hiring in Sampson… Now, that makes 2 programs he’s left in shambles…
And what is his punishment..? A lucrative assistant coach contract in the NBA…
And you wait and see, another college team will hire him again after a few years, if not ESPN… They seem to like the ex-cons angle, (see: Doug Gottlieb & Mike Breneman)

Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
