Media Watchdogs React To Vitale on UNC-UK
"While it's true that the network has seemingly improved as a whole, there's another spot where it's lacking any semblance of betterment. And that's within its constant, and nauseating, barrage of Dick Vitale. Look, I love the guy for his work in bringing attention to the Sport, and I believe he should be in the Hall of Fame, but his homerism and love for all things in the state of North Carolina is just beyond distracting at this point." --Awful Announcing
"After one night, it's safe to say Vitale has crossed the line from endearingly annoying to just plain insufferable. ...After UNC had sufficiently pulled away from Kentucky, I switched to the Davidson-Oklahoma game, and it was like this auditory crush had been lifted off my chest. I could just enjoy basketball." --The Dagger

Vitale
Is, and has always been an idiot. He has always hated Kentucky, and I hate listening to his crap on ESPN. I always turn the radio on to keep from listening to his very annoying voice. I hope he retires soon.

I disagree
The man has not “always hated Kentucky.” Vitale is no different than your average front-runner fan that you can find in any sports bar across the nation. They’re the ones you saw wearing Michigan gear during the Fab 5 years and traded that in for some Yankees wear in the late 90’s and can often be seen sporting Boston Red Sox apparell while living in Louisville.
Vitale was just as big a fan of Kentucky in 1996 as he is of any hot school who doesn’t play in the ACC. I remember him commenting several times in the 95-96 season that UK’s second five would be ranked in the top 25. He also showered constant affection on Tubby and Donna, even if not necessarily on the program itself.
I’m certainly no Vitale fan, but I won’t call him a “hater” he’s just a blowhard who can’t see past the headlines to see a real story.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Not True
Vitale has been a great advocate for college basketball the past 30 years and a very deserving HOFer.

Advocate
Being an advocate for college basketball doesnt mean you should be in the hall of fame.
Vitale’s very lucky he got his job as a commentator but IMO listening to him is like nails on a chalkboard. He offers nothing but diaper-dandy, PTP’er, and DUKE/UNC love fests and he was a failure as a coach.
Not a hall of famer in my book.

He's VERY DESERVING Of HOF Status
Bobby Knight (and others of his stature) said as much.

That's a legitimate question.
Reasonable people will disagree as to whether he belongs in the hall of fame. As Forty mentioned, Knight supported his entry as did John Wooden, Pete Newell, Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, John Chaney, Don Haskins, Lute Olson, Denny Crum, Jim Boeheim and Rick Barnes. Here’s the blurb from the Hall of Fame announcing his selection.
DICK VITALE – Contributor (Finalist in 2004, 2006), a native of Passaic, NJ, has been synonymous with college basketball for more than 20 years as the lead color announcer for ESPN. A successful coach at the high school (East Rutherford), collegiate (University of Detroit) and professional (Detroit Pistons) levels, Vitale began his broadcasting career with ESPN in 1979 and has helped make the network an integral part of college basketball’s popularity. His enthusiastic, upbeat style has resulted in a lexicon of now-familiar phrases as “Get a TO,” “Awesome, Baby,” and “PTP-er.” An author of six books chronicling his love affair with basketball, Vitale was recipient of the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy electronic media award (1988) and won the NABC Cliff Wells Appreciation Award in 2000.
What people can’t question is the man’s enthusiasm and passion for basketball nor his relentless efforts to raise funds for cancer research.
That said, Vitale has become so well know he stands as a caricature of himself: much more advocate and than analyst. As one of the linked posts said, he routinely uses games as a soapbox to assail the ills of basketball or promote a particular aspect of the sport. I wish he would spend less time doing this and more speaking as how to feed the post, or attack a 2-3 zone or defend an inbounds play and so on.

I First Heard Of Dick Vitale In 1971
He was touting 6-11 Les Cason of East Rutherford NJ (he was HS coach) as The Next Alcindor (etc). Cason went to Long Beach State where Jerry Tarkanian coached (then).
Cason was (more or less) a disappointment.

More or Less?
Well… if he was billed as the next Kareem Abdul-Jabar… and I’ve never heard of him… I’d say its safe to say he was a disappointment! Ha!

Trying To Be Polite
And he may be a fine human being (today). Just not a great basketball player (then) despite Vitale saying he was.

Cason died in 1997 of AIDS compliacations that developed from a bad drug habit.

Great find, THM.
There is an overwhelming, almost promotional aspect to the way ESPN treats the North Carolina schools. It is not just nauseating, it’s wrong.
