Dana O'Neil: The Gray Area of Recruiting
A few digs at Gillispie here... and the actual dollar amount paid to Daniel Orton's dad. (Hint: It makes the $1000 in the Emory Express envelope look cheap.)

Hint For The Author Of That Article
That sort of thing has been going on for a long time.
UCLA did it. UK did it. Most programs did it.

I thought that was the whole point of the article.

It mostly was.
There is no doubt that paying kids fathers and so forth for “speaking” needs to be stopped. This is just a no brainer. Yes, it’s legal and I have defended the practice as an ethical dilemma for coaches, but it needs to be outlawed.
I also think that players should be ineligible to attend schools where some influential person in their lives (talk about a nightmare definition) has been hired at the university under consideration within a certain number of years of their signing there. Rick Pitino did it back when Jamaal Magliore was being recruited, and other schools have done similar. That just needs to stop, and the only way it ever will is by NCAA legislation. They also need to stop the paying of officials by schools during the off season to go off on junkets to referee games.
None of this stuff is that hard or complicated, and if the NABC thinks they can stop it, they are delusional. Besides, sooner or later a major offender or three is going to wind up running the NABC.
We make rules to define the limits of behavior, and rules are made to be parsed.

while BCG was a focus for a small part of the article
i don’t like lines like this…it just reeks of bias.
Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie, who impishly tweaks the NCAA at every turn, came under fire not once, not twice but three times in the past six months.
and then you’re going to mention that he recruited an eighth grader prompting the NABC to say you probably shouldn’t do that. doesn’t that naturally segue into Donovan getting an eighth grader after the NABC’s proclamation? apparently not.

Yeah.
I noticed that as well. All I can say in the author’s defense is that the article was long, and including Donovan wasn’t really necessary to her point.

no mention of...
Donavon offering an 8th grader, after the NCAA spoke up…
Donavon being in bed with the AAU coaches…
Kansas still being on probation…
Duke hiring players “moms” for positions at the school…
Duke offering a class called “coaching 101”
There are many more, but my brain is just a bit slow this morning…
funny how none of that gets mentioned… Don’t get me started on ESPN and all their ex-ACC personal…
Oh, by the way, they just hired another ex-dukie, Jason Williams… and the beat goes on…

BCG rated TWO photos for the article......
I guess we should be proud, huh? ;-l
Continuing the list:
Kansas hired Danny Manning’s father. See the ‘88 Champs.
Illinois hired Sergio McClain father Wayne, who had been the coach at Peoria, and brought half the team with him. See Weber’s Final Four team…..
Just a couple more high profile examples left out…………..

It's Been Done For 50+ Years
And every time someone tries to stop it, a new loopholeis found to get around it.

one more
wasn’t there something with a player’s mom getting a job at FedEx and Memphis?

Nah ...
…The mother of a big Memphis recruit worked at Fedex, and the CEO of Fedex, a big Memphis booster, called her to congratulate her about her son doing something related to Memphis. I forget the details and am too lazy to look them up right now. :-)

Maybe So
But that sort of thing happens a lot more often than one might think.

True.
But it needs to stop.
