Orton a Cat
Daniel Orton has committed to UK. Orton will formally announce at a press conference tomorrow.
Congratulations to Coach Gillispie. I can only imagine this infuriates the other college coaches after Gillispie's "underhanded" gambit to move up Midnight Madness. Nevertheless, this is a substantial get for the Cats and should put them on solid footing down low for years. Also a suitable Patrick Patterson if/when he goes pro after this year?

YES! HAHAH!
“I can only imagine this infuriates the other college coaches after Gillispie’s ‘underhanded’ gambit to move up Midnight Madness.”
I hope so. I really do. I want them to be furious. I want opposing fans to make an uproar over it and keep bringing it up. I want everyone but the UK faithful to scream bloody murder about it, because I’m just going to laugh and laugh and laugh at them.
This is awesome. Orton is a beast, guys. I’ve seen him play 5 or 6 times, including saturday in lexington, and he is GREAT! HUGE GET!

No worries.
This was welcome news to get my mind off the South Carolina game. Ugh.
Two months (!). Two weeks. Two pencils.

oh, no WAY
I go away from the computer for one day and here this on my return! This is so awesome. Maybe I should go away more often.

I don't think ...
… that’s why it happened. It used to happen to me all the time — I would be away, and there would be some huge news.
It’s just Murphy’s law. :-)

it's like having to wear your lucky shirt
for every game or whatever…I can’t quite believe I don’t personally influence these outcomes : )

Favors???
Guess this commit takes us out of the running for Derek Favors?

Undoubtedly ...
… although I don’t think we have been a serious consideration for him for some time. He will stay close to home.

UK Has 12 Returning Scholarship Players And 3 Recruits
2 returning players will have to go off scholarship, leave, or something.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 14, 2008 6:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well ...
… my understanding is one of them (Donald Williams) will not be taking a scholarship next year as part of an agreement for this year, which leaves us only one short. Tubby Smith managed to handle a scholly shortage a few years back, as I recall, and I’m sure Gillispie and the athletic department will find a way.

Agreed
But 2 players will have to punt their scholarships or leave/transfer.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 17, 2008 11:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
My guess is that
Donald Williams will relinquish his scholarship (as agreed) and Stewart will leave/transfer.

I wouldn't be ...
… too quick to consign Stewart to the dustbin. I think he may well have a breakout year.
These little tidbits of news that cast him in a bad light are likely just motivation. We’ll see.

I Wouldn't Trust Maggard As Gospel
It reamins to be seen whether Williams is a 1-year scholarship deal or not.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 18, 2008 10:38 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have ...
… intelligence from other sources that Maggard is correct about this. I never, ever trust a single source, Maggard or otherwise.

Maybe
Maybe not. Remains to be seen. He’s good enough to play SOMEWHERE on scholarship and is unlikely to pay out of state costs to attend UK on his own.
by FortyYearCatFan on Oct 18, 2008 11:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree with that.
I would expect him to transfer, although Maggard says otherwise. I doubt that part. He is clearly good enough to get a ride at many schools, and I would be surprised if he hung around after this year.
Still, if he plays well enough, there may be a ride available after the ‘09 crunch. We’ll just have to wait and see. But I have it from several sources that he has specifically agreed that his scholarship is only available for this year. I am comfortable enough with it that I now consider it a fact. That could obviously change, but only if Gillispie decides to change it for some reason.

It Costs $25K (I Think) To Attend UK As Out-of-Stater
I don’t see Donald Williams able to pony up that $ even for a year.
I think he’ll either stay at UK on scholarship or transfer elsewhere (on scholarship).
Corey Sears was on 1-year scholarship a few years back. He didn’t last too long even as in-state walk-on. (Note: Williams >>> Sears as a player)

I can't really disagree with that ...
… unless he qualifies for some sort of non-athletic aid.
I have always said that it makes no sense for him to stay, and I still say that. A scholarship is not out of the realm of possibility if some other player gets sufficient aid to open one up unexpectedly (like happened with Marquis Estill — I believe he got some sort of hardship aid). But I expect him to transfer next year.

Student Loans are handed out faster than Sub-Prime mortgages in 2005
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Not Any More
The student loan business is extremely tight these days.
