I'm coming to Lexington!

Like General McArthur's promise to Manila (I SHALL RETURN), I hereby decree that I shall be present for the UK-UF football game.

Star-divide

All right, I'm coming up to Lexington.  I need the full visitor's guide.  What to do, where to go, etc.  Will I be showered with refuse as I enter the stadium?  Will fans be dangling noosed stuffed Gator toys in front of us?

And finally, where will Tru's tailgate be held?  We would like some free food and refreshments.

CAN'T WAIT!!!

What to expect......
I suspect you and your Gator-aides will find a most hospitable atmosphere awaiting you in Lexington.  Other than the occasional wacko-fan (we all have them), you'll find the atmosphere to be fun and exciting but for the most part non-confrontational and mild.

Over the last 20 years, Gators at Commonwealth have come to expect good things and they have received them.  So, they are all in a good natured mood.

Cat Fans, on the other hand, have come to expect either heartbreak or beatdown, thus lowering expectations and cat calls to a bare minimum.

Now, if we were to starting kicking some Gator tail, I suspect the mood would change drastically.

Man ...
GP, I would love to be there.  I'm afraid, though, that I missed out on the whole tailgating thing by a generation or so.

It isn't outside the realm of possibility I will be able to attend the game, but at this point, it looks doubtful.  And since I don't get to Lexington too much, I can't really advise you on restaurants, either.

But one of my best friends lives up in Lexington and he will very likely be at the game, so I'll ask him where to go and what to do, etc, and give you a full run down.  Also, many of my readers will undoubtedly be there and have advice for you.

I think I can guarantee you won't be showered with refuse.  But you may have to endure a friendly taunt or two ...

Best Burger in Lex
I haven't been back there in a couple years but you can't go wrong with a burger from Lynagh's on Woodland Ave! Not a bad selection of beers too.

I second this
The O'Round is tasty, but the Guido is pure cardiac delight.

Ha Ha!
Well, you never know for sure.

Odds are against it, though.

Sell your tickets to me
I'll go sit in the guest section with a t-shirt. On the t-shirt will be our famous Donovan with UK Box O' Money on it, and the words, "I bet I'm going to regret not taking this..."

I normally don't get to tailgate; I'm married with children. But that day is my birthday, so I might go hang out with my tailgating buddies before the game; Hefty Lefty from FireBilly and the guys from LogeLevel.com. If you want to swing by where we're at, let me know.

If you come into town early (around lunchtime), head to Billy's BBQ on Tates Creek Road. They have above-average chicken and pulled pork and an excellent sauce. The "Tailgate Special" is quite affordable and offers a 1/2 chicken and sides. They lose points for having mutton as a seasonal item only. (Note to reader: Fake Gimel grew up around Owensboro KY, which claims the title of BBQ Capital of the World.)

I've never been a big fan of the bar scene. Two Keys (next to UK's Campus) gets all the publicity but I always thought it was meh. Gambino's is normally hopping, but I've never been there. Outside of downtown/campus area, one of the hotspots is Harry's on Tates Creek Road. I guess that's a hotspot if you're 30 or older and hope you might run into Billy Gillespie there.

If somebody tells you, "Hey, lets go to the Blue Moon," tell them to feck off.

If you decide to stay the night, wake up from your defeated-by-UK hangover early and get to Keeneland, which is our beautiful racing track near the airport. Gates open at 11, racing starts at 1.

Places to go.
As far as restaurants go. Pazzos (is close to Memorial coliseum on South Limestone) on campus is an excellent pub to visit. Great Italian food for a modest price with 39 beers on tap. One also cant go wrong with Joe B's (just down the street from Pazzos on Maxell and South Upper.) Joe B's is a great italian place in an old methodist church. Its cool.

Now that im thinking about it Lexington has some great italian places.

Im not really into the bar scene so I cant steer you in that direction. Billy's would be a good place to get a tailgating package as would Applecreek BBQ on Pasadena Dr. You might try the Horse and Barrel if your an old dude that likes real bars and not a club. Its a new bar that opened up next to Deshays (good eats) on Main St.

Keeneland should be running so if you can you really shouldn't miss that. Also if you go to Keeneland you should drive out Versailles road a bit and see the castle. (yes Lexington has a castle) Thats about it.

Thanks...
Tru's notshowingupedness is a major blow but I'm still going to be there.  We'll probably come in the morning of the game and head out afterward (staying in North Carolina at that time, normally I live in Central Florida.)  We'll be sure to arrive early enough to enjoy some of what beautiful Lexington has to offer.

This game is shaping up to be a major showdown!  I was once 100% confident my Gators would win...  now I'm more like 70/30.  (Thinks of that Seth Adams 80 yard touchdown bomb) Okay, 65/35.  It's going to be tough to beat the Cats!

I hope ...
we can be worthy of that much respect.  If our defense continues to improve, and injuries don't decimate our O and D line, we have a chance to shock the world.

But our lines are so damn thin!  That gives me nightmares.

I expect you
will be treated with boos and jeeres.  But unlike my experience as a UK fan going to the swamp, I doubt you will have ice thrown at you and people kneeing you in the back everytime they walk behind you.  Sorry, UF has a classless arrogant fanbase.

Trust me ...
we all have our jerkwads.  Kentucky is no exception, unfortunately.

But our football fans are waaaaayyyy mellower than our basketball fans, as a whole.  We don't have much to be classless or arrogant about when it comes to football. :-)
