Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

OPEN SHOT: Jared Carter edition

Well, we all know that Jared Carter reportedly has an injury, and Internet reports have it as minor.  But it is to the same shoulder he recently had surgery on, so it is a concern.

If Carter were to have to sit out a significant portion of next year, how do you think it would affect Gillispie's game plan?

Open thread time - talk about this, or whatever's on you mind ...

Hey, did anybody but NCAA Hoops Today notice that it is only 4 months to Big Blue Madness?  WooHoo!

Update [2007-6-16 7:34:55 by Truzenzuzex]:  More on Carter's injury here. It looks like he is going to be fine.

Hey Look!
National media member notices UK not racist anymore!

Mike DeCourcy, whom I profiled in the stone age of this blog, talks about the relevance of Tubby Smith's hiring.

And I thought I was the only one!

I don't get it ...
Is he seriously suggesting that we felt so redeemed from our "racist" past that we gave Smith a Northern shove?

I mean, the fans, sure.  They shoved.  The administration?  I don't know, maybe they shoved, too.  He may be right, I just haven't seen enough proof for me to buy that angle.

But I suppose it is progress, of a sort.

I think Carter's time would be up.  With the rate Gillespie is recruiting top notch talent and the relative lack of Carter's "upside," I think UK would have to cut ties.  I know that's not the "right thing" to do in a lot of people's opinion, but Gillespie is essentially trying to rebuild.  One scholarship could make a huge difference.

If he were to do that to Carter ...
the blast from this blog would be heard 'round the world.

Trust me.

You just don't do that to people unless your name is Rick Pitino.

It doesnt matter...
If BCG recruits a legit big man  who can play immediatley I believe Jared would transfer. His he really scholarship worthy?  Maybe at murray or morehead, not UK.

Yes
I think Carter is a lot better than you naysayers think he is.

He hasn't even had a chance to show it. I'm not saying he'll be awesome, but Aaron Gray is a good template.

Apparently ...
he is worthy of a scholarship.  He is on scholarship.

If Carter transfers, that's a fact of life.  If Gillispie recruits over him, again, a fact of life.  But Carter is not to blame for the injuries, and I don't want UK to descend back into the days of Pitino where this place was run like an NBA team.

Carter
I dont think he would do that to Carter. Carter might never get clock again but I dont think his scholarship would be pulled. The backlash from Kentuckians everywhere would be horrific. That said.

I dont want to beat a kid while he is down but Carter really needs to toughen up. I cant help but think that if he would toughen up an push someone around he would be dislocating shoulders instead being dislocated.

He seems like he has some good instincts but I think the problem is how late in his life he came to basketball. He has only been playing 5-6 years and doesnt know how to be a big man.

by davw83 on Jun 15, 2007 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

He does ...
need to toughen up, there is no doubt about that.  But it is somewhat easier, especially after an injury requiring surgery, to reinjure that area of the body.  Toughness has nothing at all to do with that.

Hopefully, Carter's shoulder will heal and he will have the opportunity to play.  I saw a few improvements in his game for the few moments he played last year, mostly in his shooting form.  What he really needs to work on is his footwork, and keeping the ball high.

I think Carter may yet surprise us all.  He really hasn't played enough college basketball to make any kind of informed judgments about his ability.

JL need I remind you that was...
A Tubby Schollie.  So was Sheray, Bobby, Bernard cote, adam williams, etc.  Come on guys.  "Naysayers" its fact, his high school numbers werent great. I remeber Bullitt East, whose biggest guy was 6'4" or so killed him.  I know we all want the Kentucky boys to do well, but he just isnt an sec caliber player.  Say what you want, but when you're 7'2" and weigh 200lbs and has been hurt every year at uk, he needs to toughen up.

by tiger85 on Jun 15, 2007 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

Please ...
Tayshaun, Fitch, Bogans, Hawkins, Hayes, Azubuike etc. were all also "Tubby schollie(s).

He wasn't a great player in high school, and I don't know if he will ever be a contributor in college, but he hasn't played enough basketball to make any kind of intelligent judgment.

by Glenn Logan on Jun 16, 2007 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions

However...
All those players you listed as "Tubby schollies" were great high school players.  May not have been McD boys,, but they were all really highly recruited players.  Can't really say that about Carter.

by T Svoboda on Jun 16, 2007 7:24 AM EDT reply actions

You can't?
Scout had him at 4 stars, and the following schools offered him scholarships:

Kentucky
Boston College
Cincinnati
North Carolina
Western Kentucky
Georgia Tech
Illinois

That doesn't sound like a bad list of offers to me.  In fact, I think we can safely say that our current coach has offered guys with less formidable lists than this.

by Glenn Logan on Jun 16, 2007 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

You can't
The only school that means anything on that list besides UK is UNC, and the UK was a reactionary offer to UNC.  They offered first and we felt we couldn't let a quality team like UNC get a 7 footer out of Kentucky without trying.

by T Svoboda on Jun 16, 2007 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

Whatever ...
As far as I am concerned, Cincinnati is a quality program, and so is Boston College and Georgia Tech.

Your mileage may vary.

by Glenn Logan on Jun 16, 2007 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

so what...
Scout has ranked 1000's of players and I bet a huge percentage of those never pan out to be as good as they have them ranked. Nobody recruited him because of his game, they recruited him because of his size.

Who has BCG offered with "less formidable" list"? Hamga UNLV went to the sweet 16 or elite 8 last year.  Sanchez to Arkansas, Jai to FLorida! Lets see who he has signed Legion after getting out of his LOI Kansas, and Ucla, and we all know PP could have went anywhere in the country.  Why would you even say that BCG has offered less formidable players,  at least he has top players listing us in there top 3-5!!!

by tiger85 on Jun 16, 2007 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

Well, that's an easy one ...
the JUCO power forward that I think wound up at Purdue he offered, the Thorns kid that wound up going to the Hokies, just to mention two.

by Glenn Logan on Jun 16, 2007 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Carter
i dont think Carter was a bad offer. His list of schools is pretty good and not just UNC either. Illinois, BCU, Georgia Tech are all major D-1 programs. The only thing that really bugs me about Carter is his toughness. As far as his skill set he hasnt been given enough time to show what he can do and we have to remember he may blossom late as he hasnt been playing the game very long at all.

by davw83 on Jun 16, 2007 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

Wait and see...
Every time I saw him play, Carter looked like he could get it togehter with a few more trips down the floor and just as he would start to look comfortable, he would get pulled in Tubby's frantic sub paterns.

I do sometimes feel like some of the other coaches figured out Tubby's recruiting "style" and could get him to jump on a particular player if they showed interest at the right time and clear UK out of the way on other guys. I am sure you guys can list the details of recruiting classes and prove this wrong but it just "felt" odd sometimes.

by wilson452 on Jun 18, 2007 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

Well ...
I don't think any coach is clever enough to manipulate the recruiting process like you suggest.

But I do think Carter will improve under Gillispie.  He may prove me wrong, but I believe the kid can be a serviceable SEC center, if not all-Conference.
