Around SBN: Eagles miracle run continues with road win over the Vikings Bar-right-arrows

Promoted from the Diaries :: Fine. I'll admit it.

I was wrong.  There I said it.  For the longest time myself and JL seemed to be the only people saying that Tubby shouldn't leave, and at minimum should be given a year to fix the deficiencies in the program we have all come to love.  This diary isn't a knock on Tubby Smith at all, nor should it necessarily be confused in any way as such.  Instead, it is more of a revelation I've had over the past few weeks.

Coach Gillispie has been the new UK coach for a little over 6 weeks.  During this time, I have experienced something I have not seen in my albeit relatively short time following the Kentucky program (and by relatively short I only say that because I am of the ripe old age of 24).  But what has transpired during this six week period has been nothing short of amazing.  There has been a newfound rejuvenation in the spirits of the Kentucky faithful, and for the first time in a long time recruiting battles have that sense of fun and anticipation in knowing that we won't just settle for lesser-tier players in the event our number 1 or number 2 targets fail, but knowing that our 3, 4, and 5 offers for the same position are just as good and just as talented as those highly coveted recruits every school wants.  We no longer expect to see what diamonds in the rough can be found in the spring signing period.  Instead, we wait with baited breath on who, among a veritable bevy of options will be the next to sign.  For me, that is such a fantastic turnaround that was neither expected nor within rational contemplation in such a short period of time.

Let's face the facts.  Tubby's recruiting was never quite what we expected, and in certain cases ran contrary to what we thought to be beneficial to the program.  During each offseason I can remember following recruiting, I had that sense of cynicism, wondering who the next high profile recruit to spurn UK would be this season.  Be it Tyler Hansborough, Brandon Wright, Thaddeus Young, Deon Thompson, Tyler Smith, Dan Werner, or even the famous Tyrone Nash, I never had that gut feeling that we would land the one who could make the turnaround a reality.  UK seemed to be that cute girl living in a house full of playmates.  Sure we looked good, but were nothing but a backup plan in case the others didn't for some reason work out.  Not any more.

In six weeks, Coach Gillispie has signed two fantastic players, on and off the court, and received a verbal from a third.  GJ Villarino, a guard with a great reputation for leading teams and scoring, has already verbally committed for the '09 class.  Alex Legion, a Parade All American pure shooter from Oak Hill Academy joins the Cats and with him comes dreams of that fast pace we have all wanted.  Patrick Patterson, a McDonald's All American fills the gaping hole we have had in the 4 spot for what seems like the past 6 years.  In six weeks, Gillispie has taken what was a guard heavy UK team with little inside threat, to a guard heavy UK team with one of the best high school recruits controlling the paint.  More importantly, watching the Patterson highlight clips on YouTube show a power forward who loves to run.  With such a guard-heavy team, this seems to be a match made in heaven.

Tubby laid the framework for a commitment from Patterson, and Gillispie opened the door, held it open, and finally walked through it with Patterson in hand.  For developing and culminating the relationship for three years with Patterson, Tubby deserves the respect.  However, in six weeks, Gillispie continued the courtship, and deserves even a higher level of respect for finishing the job.  Although I understand the danger of laying all of our eggs in one basket, the addition of one player to UK's roster has done more for the program than his contributions on the floor may ever well do...we no longer are that cute girl in the house of playmates.  Gillispie's arrival has signaled our transformation into Playmate of the Year.

Looking through my rose-colored glasses, I can be nothing short of excited about the oncoming season.  I look at Gillispie's track record with previous teams he has turned around, I look at their respective rosters, and I smile.  UK has much more talent than either Texas A&M or UTEP when Gillispie took the helms.  What will he do with our team?  Time will tell, but I, for one, have a huge smile on my face thinking about next year.

I don't expect nor anticipate a championship.  Honestly, a sweet sixteen finish would be fantastic given the circumstances.  What I have come to realize over the past weeks is that instead of being a national contender in my head, we are becoming one in the minds of many, pundits included.  Don't believe me, look at what the ESPN writers had to say about programs best poised for success.  The national media is recognizing it, as well as, and perhaps more importantly, the recruits see it.  Right now, our list of potential recruits for '08 and '09 seems unending.

Time will tell as to Gillispie's final impact on the program.  But if the past six weeks have been any indication of what is to come, it is not unthinkable to see banner number 8 or 9 to be hanging in Rupp in the next few years.

Again, I was wrong.  Tubby's leaving has opened the door for probably the most exciting time I've seen around UK basketball by Coach Gillispie, and his players haven't even stepped foot on the floor.  Gillispie understands the demands the fans place on his success, and I truly feel that there is no other man capable to do the job.  He won me over in his press conference announcing him as the new coach, and in doing so, seems to have won over many more as well.

There may be some stumbles out of the gate, but things are looking better.

[editor's note, by Truzenzuzex]  This is outstanding work and needed a bigger stage.  Well done.

Nice to see
some are starting to come around now. I was also not a Tubby basher. I even defended him until the middle of the last season. Inconsistency in a team spells coaching trouble to me. I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised to see the quick results from BCG. I was happy to see him come to UK, and expected an eventual turnaround. I just didn't expect it to be this year. I know though, that we've just begun the transformation and it will likely be a roller coaster ride for the first half of the season. I expect we'll slip into the draft by mid season and start working our way up the pack. I wouldn't be too surprised to see a top 10 finish in rankings. Here's hoping....

re: espn pundits
here's where they have us:

Lunardi:    No 1
Bilas:      No 2
Glockner:   No 2
Forde:      No 4
Katz:       N/A (Not in top 10)

Andy Katz has always been a UK hater of epic proportions. I dont get it. What did we do to him?

Not to him ...
We've done nothing FOR him. UK fans seem to forget how closed the Smith era was to the media in general. It seems clear to me that access=love, and hopefully Gillispie will change that.

My thoughts ALMOST exactly
This was a great, great piece and it's almost creepy how much it mirrors my thoughts--with one exception.  Now maybe its the Little Miss Know-it-all Herminone Granger in me (Harry Potter reference anyone?  anyone??) but I'm not willing to say I was "wrong" about Tubby.  I don't think any of us Tubby-lovers thought at the time, "wow, we have got the best possible coach in the whole world, and the program is in the most wonderful shape ever!!"  Now, THAT would have warranted feeling that hey, maybe I was wrong.  But piketaylor, I have a feeling your feelings were more along the lines of mine: I supported Tubby while he was here because I felt that he deserved that--he is an undeniably winning coach, a class act and he won us #7.  Maybe I'm easy--ha ha--but that's enough to make me to cheer, then shut the f#!* up and let a coach coach.  Things obviously weren't the greatest they'd ever been in the Big Blue Kingdom, but dude was our coach and barring something crazy, I'm gonna support the coach because I love my team.  When Tubby left I was shocked, sad, a little excited, slighly relieved, and ready to love whoever replaced him.  It is hard to imagine even the most joyless fan not being giddy over Billy G's fast start.  But I don't feel like those who supported Tubby while he was here should feel some sort of obligatory obligation to go the sackcloth and ashes route.  That I supported Tubby doesn't take a thing away from my excitment--make that euphoria--about Gillispie.

aagh!
Man, I hate that you can't edit posts--typos really bother me.  Obviously I meant to say:

"I don't feel like those who supported Tubby while he was here should feel some sort of OBLIGATION to go the sackcloth and ashes route"

...since OBLIGATORY OBLIGATION is very reduntandly reduntant.  This is what happens when you type stuff while at work, switching screens back and forth between UK basketball goodies and boring work crap as people walk by your desk : )

Oh I definitely think we are the same here
Although I supported Tubby and wanted him to do successfully during his time here, I was not blind to the problems that plagued our program.  I thought perhaps it would be best if he was given a chance to fix them, but instead he opt to go elsewhere, and things, so far, have turned out for the better.

In the end, I've come to the conclusion that his leaving for Minnesota was in the best interests of all parties involved.

Tubby. Mitch and Pappy O'daniels
Good comments BKG. Nice Reference. I dont think supporting Tubby should take away from your excitment at all. As fans we support the program not simply the coach and right now is a very exciting time for the program. I was in the same boat as JL and Tru defending Tubby and now I am totally glad that the change happened.

I am not bashing Tubby in any way but I think his failure to satisfy the fan base boils down to a few simple things. 1) he obviously didnt like the recruiting trail all that much. Dont know why but the man did have a large family at home whereas BCG has nothing to do but talk to recruits and watch game tape. 2) His assistants obviously where a drain on the program as witnessed by their failure to get new jobs and the  new jobs they ended up with. In fairness to Tubby though we all act like we missed on tons of recruits throughout his tenure but all of the ones we list only occurred in the last two to three years. Obviously he wasnt the greatest recruiter but we only really noticed in the recent past. Bottom line the man got tired. If you have ever seen a picture of any president at the start and end of their term you will witness an aging that parallells how Tubby looked shortly before he left. THe program needed a shot in the arm and with his departure UK got it. Now we have our own stumpy midget we can brag on even smaller than Stokes's.

On another note. Im not the biggest Mitch B. fan but UK really needs to hand it to the man. He knows how to hire a coach.

i was wrong too; it takes a big man to admit that.
Thanks for this wonderful diary.  You did a fantastic job.

Spot on...
Great article, my friend!

Tubby is a Great Man, Great Coach, and Great Friend to the state of Kentucky.  I, for one, appreciate the guidance he gave to the players and the job he did here at UK.

That being said, I truly believe it was a mutual decision for him to leave the "Petri-Dish" that is UK Basketball.  Hey....it takes a HUGE persona and a general Bullet-Proof personality to withstand the Microscope that is BigBlueNation!!!  I wish Tubby the best in Minnesota.

After Lucas, Hamga, & Sanchez committed elsewhere, I had a funny feeling that Patterson was ours.  I attribute that to Coach G.  It didn't take a brainiac to figure out that if we landed one of those four, we NEEDED Patterson!  I think all of his attention went to landing this fine, young gentleman.  I do not blame him.

PP may not be the best player UK has ever landed, but, this definitely sent a message that the Big Blue is back on the Recruiting front and will be the Team to beat if you want a big name from here on out.

Bottom line.....WE WILL COMPETE FOR TITLES VVEERRRRYYYY SOON!!!!

What's the difference between a DYNASTY and a WANNABE? 75 Miles and 5 TITLES!!!! C...A...T...S...
