Florida International at Kentucky -- Open Game Thread

This is the official Open Game Thread for Florida International at Kentucky.  For those of you who can't get the game on TV, here are some links:

I'll be honest -- with all the UK action going on in a very compressed time frame, I have not had any time at all to examine this game.  Florida International is currently ranked # 255 on Ken Pomeroy's site, and UK is currently ranked #88.  Theoretically, that means we are much better than this team.  After the debacle with San Diego, I am loathe to even mention my perception of the relative ability of these two teams.

At this moment, I have no particular feeling about this game.  It is obviously a game we should dominate, but I said exactly the same thing Saturday, and look what happened.  Will we see another lowly team come in here and get a signature win in Rupp Arena?  I hope not, and my mind says it won't happen.

This game is truly a must-win for our team's sanity, and the sanity of the Big Blue Nation.  I can scarcely imagine the meltdown if we drop 2 in a row to teams in the bottom 20% of the entire NCAA at home.  But enough doom and gloom hangover.  We should handle this team, even though they are actually bigger than we are.

Florida international is currently 3-8, with their most recent loss being to Purdue.  Billy Gillispie is said to be a friend of the head coach Sergio Rouco, who apparently worked under Gillispie at UTEP.  Let's just hope the former boss can get the better of the former assistant this time.

For the record, FIU's roster stats look like this:
Roster/Stats (per game)
PLAYER POS GP MIN PTS REB AST
R. Hicks C 11 23.9 13.5 5.7 0.5
A. Galindo F 11 31.7 12.9 6.4 2.0
K. White G 10 21.9 9.4 1.8 1.8
C. Fuller G 11 26.7 8.2 3.1 2.9
E. Nsangou G 11 22.7 7.7 2.7 2.0
T. Russell G 11 14.5 4.4 1.5 1.4
M. James G 10 25.6 3.9 1.7 3.1
N. Gacesa F 11 14.9 3.6 2.2 0.3
C. Essola F 9 12.1 2.7 2.9 0.1
B. Ndiaye F-C 10 11.8 2.4 2.5 0.3
N. Taylor G 8 2.3 0.0 0.1 0.1

My keys to the game:

  • Get the ball to Patterson in scoring position
  • Win the rebounding battle
  • Stop the point guard from getting into the lane
  • Continue to play hard.  It's bound to work eventually.
  • Find a way to limit turnovers

If these look suspiciously like the last ones, what can I say?  This is basketball, not nuclear weapons design.

I will not be liveblogging the basketball game but do plan to liveblog the football game.  Please do avail yourselves of the comments in the open thread, I will be here for virtually the entire game.

GO, CATS!

They say ...
that Rupp is packed.  Pretty impressive, considering we have a bowl game today.

Jodie ...
gets the start.

That's a good sign.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:07 PM EST reply actions

Starters?
I'm working and my radio here doesn't tune in the oldies station that plays Kentucky games for some reason.

You say Jodie started, does that mean we are now 11 starting line-ups in 12 games?  Who else started?

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2007 12:15 PM EST reply actions

Starters ...
were Ramel, Jodie, Coury, Patterson and Harris.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Much better!
With Meeks, Crawford, Jasper, Bradley and Patterson, we are a different team.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Jasper ...
is the difference between an offense and an abomination.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:17 PM EST reply actions

So much better.
This team could really turn itself around with Jasper and Meeks.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:19 PM EST reply actions

yeah, it could...
It just may be too late for us to make a run on the NCAAs!  Sigh.

by blue kentucky girl on Dec 31, 2007 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Too late for a run?
No, its certainly not too late.

A win today and over UofL would put us at 7-6 going into conference play.  An exceptional run through the conference of 12-4 would put us at 19-6 headed into the SEC tourney.  I think that would get us into the tourney.

Do I think it likely?  No.  But it's not too late.

And remember, no matter how bad the year is... if we can string together 4 wins in early March, we get an auto bid.  ;-)

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2007 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

I hope you're right
I just don't know if the SEC is strong enough this year for us to get enough high quality wins to balace out our horrific bad losses, even if we DO really start racking up the wins.  Even a Louisville win (oh please oh please oh please) won't be WILDLY impressive, at least compared to how good people thought they were going to be.

But like you say, there's always the automatic bid : )

by blue kentucky girl on Dec 31, 2007 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Bradley/Crawford/Jasper/Meeks/PPat
That's a line-up that could and should be a legit team (if the seniors can get it into their heads that they are the 3rd and 4th scoring options).  Honestly, for all our lack of talent, that group of 5 is legit and then you have some role-players that could come off the bench.  Why is this such a hard concept to grasp?

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2007 12:20 PM EST reply actions

But we still ...
are allowing too many offensive rebounds.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:21 PM EST reply actions

We still ...
can't guard the pick and roll.  Jasper hits a three and his form looked much better.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:23 PM EST reply actions

And ...
we still can't keep point guards out of the lane.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:23 PM EST reply actions

Meeks is gassed.
But he fought for a rebound and got it.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:26 PM EST reply actions

Kentucky is ...
4 of 5 from the arc, and the offense looks ... like an offense.  The defense is the same, and is showing most of the same faults.  People are out of position, we have trouble guarding the pick and roll, and we are out of position trying to keep the point guard on the perimeter and out of the lane.

But I have hope for this team with a healthy Meeks and Jasper.  They are much, much better.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:27 PM EST reply actions

4 of 5 from the arc
That always makes me nervous because we can never seem to rely on our shot being there.  You would think that with 3-4 people swarming PPat every play, we should have open shots, but we still seem to miss.

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2007 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

This game ...
we are getting very good open looks, and they are going down.

It is nice to see.  Plus, Gillispie actually high-fived Porter and patted Jasper on the back.

I must say, I am encouraged.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

28-12 Cats
This is a different basketball team than we have seen this year.

Effective offense, and effective defense.  Very few turnovers.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:39 PM EST reply actions

With Jasper out ...
this team is much more tentative handling the ball.

Much more.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Jasper ...
yet another assist to Bradley, for the three, and the foul.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:44 PM EST reply actions

We knew ...
Jasper and Meeks would make a difference, but this is ridiculous.  And welcome.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

The zone ...
will not work against this UK team.  7 of 9 from the arc, 36-15 UK, 4:30 left in the half.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 12:46 PM EST reply actions

Unquestionably ...
the best half of basketball this year.  43-21.

Just what we should expect out of this group.  This is a team that can compete with anyone.

What I predicted last game...
unfortunately is happening this game.  Offense and defense are clicking with more regularity.  Combine that with the difference Jasper makes and we look like a team.

by hoopchi on Dec 31, 2007 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Well ...
at the 8:00 timeout, Kentucky had done very little wrong.  I must say, this is something we really needed, and it feels very good.

If this team shows up every time, we will be very tough indeed.  But I am now encouraged that we have a chance to win some games.

I knew we should be better, and today we truly have been.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Carter and Patterson ...
in the game at the same time.  This is the biggest lineup we can put on the floor.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Carter ...
needs to get in the weight room and stay there.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Patterson ...
is just a man.  What a block he made on rotation.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 1:59 PM EST reply actions

How in the world...
did PP get 19 points???  I was thinking 12 or 13.  Man he is good.

by hoopchi on Dec 31, 2007 2:02 PM EST reply actions

Make that 13 ...
thanks to a weak dribble by Porter.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 2:07 PM EST reply actions

FIU ...
fouled Dwight Perry on a 3 pointer.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 2:11 PM EST reply actions

At 100% personell wise I think this team
can make some waves in the SEC! I really like what I saw out there today. If the guards can 'feed' the monster (Patterson) without throwing the ball away periodically I can see us battling with the "Big Boys". Heck, we're on of the big boys (Again) with Meeks & Jasper back and healthy. I also loved the way the team moved the ball around on the Offensive size. As always the Defense is relentless!

Keep it up Cats and beat LOSERVILLE!!!!!!!!!

Expect nothing and you are seldom disappointed....

92-49 UK is the final
10 rebounds for Derrick Jasper, Patterson only had 5 rebs this game.  It was a team effort.

Finally we actually played real basketball, and there were several very unselfish, excellent sequences.

If UK can just duplicate this effort, they will be in a lot of games with tough teams.  We still have a ways to go on both sides of the floor, but this game gives us all something to point to and say, "that is what good basketball looks like this year."  Yes, the opponent wasn't that strong, but neither was G-W or San Diego.

For the first time all year, Gillispie's rotations made sense.  There appeared to be an actual plan.  The whole game didn't look so incredibly random and chaotic.  People moved to spots, made passes, and made open shots.  The ball rotation was the best we have seen in a while, and so good that several shots were taken where the nearest defender was at least 15 feet away.  That is what you love to see.

Gillispie's demeanor was noticeably more cordial toward his players, although that was really the only thing different.  He maintained a rather stoic intensity as is his wont here at UK, and coached players every time they went in and out.

This team with Jodie Meeks and Derrick Jasper playing together is unrecognizable if you have been watching the Wildcats this year.  Jasper played for 28 minutes today and did not appear winded at all, although Meeks did a couple of times.  But Jodie had the normal bounce in his step this game, unlike last, and his jump shot was much sounder than it has been since he returned from his stress fracture.

On the down side, this is two games in a row where Patterson has only pulled down 5 rebounds, and only one offensive.  That won't do.  We have got to have more productivity from him on the glass, and while scoring 20 points per game is nice, he needs to be much more assertive on the backboard.  What will no doubt help is Carter, if he can improve enough to see major minutes.  Carter has not played much basketball in the last 2 years and it shows, so he has a lot of learning to do.  But today, he played pretty well if you can ignore his 3 turnovers, all of which came on rebounds he got but lost.  Carter will never be an offensive threat, but he can clog the middle and make it harder for point guards to get to the rack.  Despite his meager statistics, Carter had an impact on the game, especially defensively.

We saw point guard penetration a few times today, but for the most part, UK did a good job with that.  Of course, the FIU point guard wasn't near as good as San Diego's.  Still, it looked like the lesson took, and that is an encouraging thought.

My game ball goes to Derrick Jasper.  Five assists, two turnovers, one block, one steal and four points in 28 minutes.  He was almost single-handedly responsible for our improvement in ballhandling, and it seemed to rub off a bit on the rest of the back court.  Jasper is the sole reason we had more assists than turnovers.  Ramel Bradley also had a nice game, and showed some real leadership out there, especially by encouraging Carter, which he did several times.  But on the down side, Ramel took a couple of selfish shots when he had wide-open teammates, and I hate that.

But all in all, it was a great effort by the Cats.  All we need to see now is if they can do it again back-to-back.  Because to beat Louisville, it is going to take what we saw today, plus a little.

Box score
shows Patterson with 4 off rebounds and 5 total.  I missed the game.  Is the boxscore incorrect?

by BeatUL on Dec 31, 2007 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.
One of the not-so-bright spots

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

Patterson's Rebounds.....
Well....maybe he only had few rebounds because Jasper took in 10 rebounds himself!  PPat finally got some help on the boards......plus, the guy for FIU was frutstrating the heck out of him.....still a solid performance.

See now......you have to feel a little better
Well, Tru, I told you that would get reassurances today...and you did.  It was a good day with both teams winning....a breath of fresh air....no delusion of greatntess here as UK has a tough road ahead, but it was nice to see the line up we all thought we would have out there playing at a high level.  Go Cats against U of L....we have a shot.

by Chuck Alexinis on Dec 31, 2007 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

I agree ...
and I am hopeful that San Diego was the bottom and we have now started our ascent.  I don't delude myself into thinking it will be rapid.  I will settle for slow and steady.

But from what I saw today, I think we are now ready to compete at all but the highest level, and that is a good start.  I realize that is an optimistic view, but I am starving for a chance to be optimistic, and I'm going to grab every opportunity.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

U of L game
I just want us to compete at a high level for U of L....win or lose....we have 4 days....hope nobody gets in trouble between now and then...ha!  The team  seemed quite loose and happy toward the end...hopefully, the garbage about transfers and discontent that comes along with losing will leave us now....again, I feel that wins and losses are secondary for now......UNTIL they play together a couple of more games....just keep the faith and keep cheering...coach knows what he is doing.

Now what we need...
is consistency.

I think if you read all the comments around this site from the last few weeks, its basically been frustration in looking for a game like this.  We all knew that there was talent there (even if its less than normal for UK... its still there).  We all knew that Billy G could coach at his other schools.  We were all wondering why that wasn't happening here.  Now that we've seen it fit together (even if it was against sub-par competition) what we need is to see it a few more times.

If the boys can show up every game, I don't think there's a team in the SEC we can't at least compete with.  Yes, I think UT and Vandy are better than us (that hurts to say) but I think the rest of the league (even Ole Miss) is in for a surprise if we can put this sort of team on the floor night after night.

Attendance
I stopped by the house for lunch and caught a few minutes of the second half on FSN and listened to quite a bit more on the radio to and fro.

One thing I noticed was the announced attendance of 19,000.  Not too shabby.  Name me one other school that can put nearly 20k in the stands for a basketball game while sending 50k to a bowl game played on the same day.

by chirop1 on Dec 31, 2007 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Indeed ...
that was truly impressive.

by Glenn Logan on Dec 31, 2007 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Starting 5
Bradley, Crawford, Meeks, Jasper and Patterson.  OK, not the ideal 1-2-3-4-5 but certainly capable of making noise in the SEC.

How successful can UK be this year?  IMO, it depends on:

  1.  Crawford and Bradley, specifically on how willing they are to play team ball.  I think they both realize that they are not guaranteed playng time and if they do not do what the coach asks they will ride the pine.
  2.  Inuries and foul trouble.  Duh.  These starting five need to avergae can average 30 to 35 minutes each.  (IMO) I do not believe that any player outside of those five should be playing for UK.  The more minutes Coury and Porter logg, the more losses UK realizes.
I have stated before UK is being rebuilt and I truly believe that.  It is a painful process.  While I do not believe UK has a depth of talent that is SEC caliber, it does not mean UK cannot catch lightning in a bottle with this starting five.  If they jell, find chemistry and build comfidence then UK can certainly compete for the SEC title.  I must believe that.

by BeatUL on Jan 1, 2008 10:26 AM EST reply actions

What Wins?
Let's see, who is more responsible for winning basketball games? Talent, or coaches?

Of course a proper mixture of both is what is most desired, but as Bob Knight will attest, one has to have players to win.

Not to say that UK should have lost to GW or SD, but having a full contingent of SEC caliber players will certainly help ease the transition.

Tremendous progress is apparent.

UL should be a good yardstick to judge how far they have come in the last few weeks.

As some have noted previously, UK's January SEC schedule is loaded with good, and one very good, teams. Vandy and UT at Rupp, MSU and UFA on the road.

Go Bearcats!
