UK fans: I say my young Gators beat your 'Cats...
... and I definitely wouldn't have predicted that pre-season.
Our fellas have played and won three games. They just finished blowing out NC Central, 105-51. None of the teams they've played are even remotely close to top-flight competition, but I'm pretty sure that North Dakota State would have beaten Gardner-Webb without too much difficulty.
For all the world, I didn't expect to see this, but here's what we've got at Florida -- a crew of freshmen and sophomores who play together beautifully, pass the ball with the best of them, and are all great shooters. Seriously, they've looked really good these past two games. Physically they resemble frosh in some respects (Chandler Parsons in particular) but they play like they've got a lot of games under their belt. They're smooth, they don't lag behind the game and they're all very much involved both offensively and defensively.
I wasn't expecting this, but I think right now Florida stands a good chance of sweeping your Billy G squad this year, unless Kentucky makes some wholesale improvements in the near term (which is a distinct possibility.) Have any of you seen Florida play yet? They're good!

Let's revisit this topic in '08.

GP
You have always struck me as a fairly reasonable person but trying to predict a win for either of these teams right now might just be a little ( a lot) premature.
Are you serious or are you just trying to rile us up?
There is a heck of a lot of season to go before these teams face each other and I'm willing to bet each of these teams will look a lot different.

Mebbe so...
A lot could change between now and then.
Less than 3 weeks ago I had already written this season off as a rebuilding year... our guys are just so young.
But damn, they're good! They're really good! I'm shocked at how well they've played these past two games. And I'm not talking about stats, or destroying cupcakes, I'm talking about how well they play together. They look really sharp. They're all such good passers and shooters, and defensively they really get after it.
I figured with the Billy G upgrade and the fact that Kentucky fields a lot more experience than Florida, that we'd almost certainly lose twice to the 'Cats this year.
Hate to say it in the present environs, but the way this team looks right now reminds me a LOT of a certain unnamed, unknown team who played in the Coaches vs. Cancer tourney in November of 2005... sans the seven-footer of course.

Who knows?
When both teams get into the meat of their non-conference schedule, we'll know. What you have seen so far from UK is a team in transition. The Gates have some continuity from last year, whereas the Cats have very little.
Hence, I think it's fair to say that the Gators are further along than the Cats are. They don't have to learn a new system, and they have people who know the system that is in place. The Cats have the luxury of neither.
But I think things will be different by the time the SEC season gets here.

Haven't seen Florida play but...
Maybe we'll get our players healthy and give you a game by March 9th. Time will tell.

A possibility...
BTW - don't act like you don't know you're trying to create a maelstrom. If you are going to smack talk, do it with style.

Less taunting methinks
I do think he's really excited for his team. I need to schedule a viewing before I get my Big Blue Boxers in a wad.
By the way, Wildcat Fans, whatever you do, don't watch UCLA play. They look like they have 5 NBA-quality guys on the floor at any given time. It was very depressing.

I'm not that much of a taunter
Perhaps it is too soon to tell too much, but the Gators are off the charts in terms of actual performance compared to expected performance. I expected them to struggle early, expected lots of raw looking moves, lots of mistakes.
Well, they're making mistakes, but not very many. And they're definitely not playing like freshmen. Again, watch 'em and I think you'll be impressed.
P.S. Nick Calathes is going to be an All-SEC player... mark my words.

Re: GP Again
Calathes, Parsons, Tyus, Lucas, and Allen are all terrific freshman.
I am on record here at ASoB as saying that Florida will be much better than the so-called experts think.
Even though the Gators will be relying on freshmen to contribute a tremendous amount of minutes, that doesn't necessarily translate into a rebuilding year in Gainesville.
15-20 years ago a 4 year high school player would play 110-140 games during his career. A high percentage of those games would be against mediocre competition. Today though, with the evolution of AAU ball, these same players are playing an additional 30-50 games against elite competition. This fact tends to expose the pretenders, and make the legitimate blue chips even better players. So, for this reason, Florida relying on youngsters isn't a bad thing. It just means they will probably be very good for a long time.
Calathes is a legitimate big time player, and will probably be Florida's leading scorer, but Parsons will be just as dangerous. At 6'9, with the ability to drain 3's, and a good inside game, he will be what all coaches desire in players: Hard to guard. His ability to float on the perimeter brings a big defender out, away from the basket, leaving Speights in a one on one situation. Or, he can post up on the block, presenting a high percentage shot opportunity.
Enjoying a prosperous year also depends on Hodge's ability to control tempo, and distribute the rock on the break. Keeping everyone involved is a major hurdle to overcome. It is easier said than done. The old man of the group as a junior, Hodge will also have to provide leadership to his younger teammates. Once again easier said than done.
Speights' play will also be key to a successful year. He hasn't had many opportunities to showcase his abilities because of the enormous talent of the Gators last year. He will be a focal point of the offense this year though. While I do not anticipate Speights leading the Gators in scoring, I feel the offense will probably run through him. If I were Donovan, in the half-court, I would run the high post. If this is the case, Speights' decision making will be of the utmost importance. Kicking out, and ball reversal will fall under his umbrella of responsibilties. This will be new to him, so his ability to find the mismatch and to make pin point passes, will be tested.
The secondary break should bring bountiful point scoring opportunities this year for UFA. With Calathes and Parsons, Donovan has two big spot up shooters. The secondary break, which relies on mismatches for easy scoring opportunities, will prove to go hand in hand with UFA's team makeup. This is where Hodge's decision making comes into play. Finding the right shooter, before the D has a chance to set, will be his primary concern. If he proves adept at this task, UFA will once again put up large numbers offensively.
This Florida team reminds me somewhat of a mid '90's UK team. Long, and athletic with solid point guard play. Calathes, Parsons, Tyus, Werner, and Allen are all 6'6 or bigger. They all can shoot the ball, and are interchangeable. The designation of positions will not be an important factor. They are all basically swing players which, with solid point play, can lead to some entertaining basketball.
Overall, I think the Gators will challenge for the SEC East title. Simply too much talent not to. They will encounter some tough times, but in the end game their talent is simply too great to struggle for very long. I love the makeup of the roster. The mix of size, and athleticism is what wins games. Donovan will not have to dig too deep into the playbook to uncover a plethora of mismatches available to him on any given night.
As far as UFA versus UK, I'll reserve judgment until after the first of the year. But if you put a gun to my head I would prognosticate a split.

I certainly do believe what I wrote. Objectivity is a trait I struggle with when UK loses, but when evaluating the opposition, I find it much easier to appreciate talent.
I visited your site, O&B Hue earlier. I was impressed. I'm glad you thought enough of my opinion to reprint it on your blog.
I think we agree on Florida's prognosis for this season. I really do believe freshman today are much more advanced than 15-20 years ago. Just look at what some of the more heralded freshman in the nation have done, in only a few games. Unbelievable and unheard of only a decade ago.
Florida, with there stable full of young talent be will fine. If Donovan and Shyatt develop this group as effectively as they did Brewer and Co., the next few years look blindingly bright for UFA.
Gillispie knows this. Donovan can now join Pitino as a coach BCG has to catch up with.
Competition either makes you or breaks you.

I think the Gators may have a fine team this year BUT I refuse to get really pumped about any team even my CATS three games into the season. With basketball Im much more "anaylst" than "Fan" when considering my team's chances for the season.
Things may be looking great for the Gators and not so great for the CAts but I really really really dont think you can get the pulse of a team, especially a young unproven team until the meat of the conference portion of the schedule. At that point I would feel comfortable making a prognostication. These Gators are YOUNG and no matter how good they are unless they are KD or GO they are going to hit a wall somewhere, likewise for our Frosh. They may bounce back and I think they will but who knows. In the meantime I do understand that it's fun to prognosticate but I just dont feel like I have seen enough from my own team to make a judgement call.
Also I HATE myself for still liking Jai Lucas.

I love it
I think probably, yeah, y'all could sweep us or not...who knows at this point. Quite frankly, and unfortunately, UK fans have a LOT more to be thinking/freaking out about right now than a couple games in 08 against Florida. Before we meet you guys even the first time, we're up against our all our biggest rivals--Louisville, UNC, IU--who are, every one of them, really good this year. Like, top 10 good. In all those games our already paper-thin team will likely playing be without our best player (at least at full strength). We've got a new coach and a new system and totally inexperienced players. And I know the media didn't discuss this much so you might have missed it, but we just lost to Gardner Freakin' Webb--we can't even look past Liberty.
I have not seen Florida play yet this year--I do look forward to checking them out. Can't say I'm exactly thrilled that they're looking better than advertized...but I'm not surprised either. They've got a hell of a lot of good young talent and a great coach. Just another good team we'll have our hands full with this year.
Oh and Fake Gimel--I'm afraid I did see UCLA play. You're right, it is totally depressing.
