A New Rupp Arena? [Promoted from the diaries]
As I'm sure all of you have heard by now, Lexington is officially "planning" for the construction of a new basketball arena to replace Rupp.
What I haven't seen is much comment from the UK fanbase. Sorry to do the drive-by posting, and admittedly it has been quite some time since I've done any posting here myself (I blame law school), but I wonder what the fans think of this idea.
From the article:
Lexington is in the early stages of planning for a state-of-the-art downtown basketball arena that would replace aging Rupp Arena as the home of the Wildcats, city officials said yesterday....
By the time the center's lease with the University of Kentucky expires in 2018, Rupp will be 42, Owen said. "Without an effective plan to replace Rupp when the existing lease is up, we believe that Lexington risks losing the benefits we've enjoyed for the last 32 years."
A new arena -- on what's now a parking lot across High Street from Rupp -- could be up and running by the 2014 or 2015 season, Owen said.
...
The consultant, who should be selected by the spring, is being asked to complete a market analysis for a new downtown Lexington basketball arena seating between 24,000 and 30,000. The analysis would include construction and operational costs as well as revenue projections. The consultant would also evaluate possible uses for Rupp Arena.

Does it Make "Cents"
I surely hope the talk of a new arena is not an example of "keeping up with the Jones'".
Nothing wrong with Rupp.
That's how I feel.

I agree to an extent
As the article points out, UK only played in Memorial for 25 years. By the end of our contract, UK will have played in Rupp for 42 years.
It will be strange to me to go to a UK game in an arena other than Rupp. There truly is something special about that place.

also
if they do decide to build this new stadium, i hope they go to 30,000 capacity. i see no way that UK can't sell that out every game. and i hope for a student section much closer to the floor.

New Arena
If Louisville's new arena is the motivating factor, that is very poor reasoning.
Whatever happens, they need to keep Rupp Arena as the name of the facility. None of this awarding naming rights to the highest bidder. If they can't afford to build without a naming rights fee, then they should not build.

corporate names

I don't think we must worry about corporate names
The new arena would be paid for through a downtown "tax increment financing" district that would generate millions of dollars that could also be used to expand the Lexington Convention Center, create a performing-arts auditorium and spur redevelopment along Manchester Street, city leaders said.

Wishful Thinking v. Reality
Someone, or some group will be against this idea. Bank on it. These someones will have a myriad of options as it pertains to slowing down, or halting this plan.
I personally think it is probably a good idea for the continued development of Lexington, but this is a huge undertaking both financially, and in terms of time.
I agree with an above poster who states that this is an idea in the infant stage. Much can happen, both to promote the plan, and detract from the vision.

Lowdown
- UK has been playing in Rupp longer than any other venue they have ver played in.
- Lexington cant schedule any conventions in Rupp between November and March becuase the basketball schedule is set only one year in advance and most conventions are scheduled 3-5 years ahead of time.
Currently the city is conducting a feasibility study to determine if this whole ITF thing will even be able to fund it. Apparenntly it works like this. The city turns the Rupp area and Manchester street into a new shopping district then all the taxes paid in this district go to pay for the bonds taken out against the new arena for the next 30 yrs. After that the taxes in the district go to wherever they would normally go. I am not too sure about this but cant have much of an opinion about this part of the plan as I dont know if this would work or not.
UK does need a new arena though. The new one would almost certainly contain private suites and more club style seating like an NBA arena that would be awesome. Trust me it would be fun to watch a game in such a place and it would bring in more revenue.

My take
I'll touch on some other things too:
naming rights - I think you can almost count on a corporate name on the arena.
Atmosphere - Rupp memories are great, but you talk to those who went to games in Memorial and they say it doesn't compare. What I am trying to says is its all about what you are used to. The team and the fans create the atmosphere...not the building.

More than basketball
This has very little to do with basketball and more to do with point #2 in the post by davw83. The fact that Lexington has only one major venue and it is under semi-permanent contract is a deal with the devil. On one hand the downtown area and hotel tax base are going to get 23k people spending money (+/- $150 each) 15+ times a year. The down side is its size and this contract.
The music industry has changed and acts can't afford to come to Rupp as most top ten acts are closer to the 8 to 10k audience. It is actually a little too large for most conventions that would come to Lexington over Cincy, Louisville, Nashville etc. in the region AND the LCVB and the Lexington Center can't sell it properly due to basketball. This killed two hockey teams and is slowly choking an arena football team. Scheduling + cost to rent + huge empty space = not a great fit for the city OTHER than UK.
Now add to that 1) a group of old money wanting Lux Boxes like they now have at Commonwealth and 2) the Horse Park getting a covered arena that can be closed and floor seating that might reach 10k and an aggressive team looking to book it with anything from dog shows to concerts and you get talk of a new arena and using UK as leverage. Throw in the Newtown Pike extension project that will create a new business and arts district in eyeshot of Rupp and it is obvious they will explore it.
I say sell it to UK and build a smaller venue next to it and do the river walk and all that jazz if they want. The city can rent it from UK when another attraction wants to use it. As for the Lux Box folks, buy some popcorn in line like the rest of us and learn to enjoy the experience and sit in a regular seat and ACTUALLY CLAP!
In the altered words of Chaz Michael Michaels "Rupp Arena IS basketball!"

when I talk about conventions coming to town I dont envision them using all of Rupp. Scaling Rupp down would be cheaper and more effective than UK continuing to play in an aging arena and a smaller one being built right beside it.
Second Rupp is a CRAPPY place to watch a basketball game. All this talk of Rupp being one of the greatest college basketball arenas is true only because UK plays there not becuase the building itself is conducive to great basketball in fact its quite the opposite.
The upper arena is archaic and like an article I just read states "it requires a mountain climbers gear to get to the upper seats". Imagine an upper arena with seat backs more room and a better view of the cats becuase that is what a new building would have.
Also for this talk of spurning private boxes. You may not like it but it brings in a lot more revenue. Currently the only way that UK can generate more income is to raise ticket prices. Private boxes would give them another means on revenue without taxing the normal game attender.

Tounge in cheak...
I agree with the boxes revenue and the University's never ending need for cash. I would take 100 boxes to keep a corporate name off of it. I am just glad they are talking new and not cut down on the blue color seats to wedge in some boxes.
My true point is that the physical real estate in Lex right now and the very real topic of much more money in tourism dollars than the basketball games bring is the biggest factor over keeping up with UofL. Heck, my little brother just got a new car and he is still and will always be my little brother. OUCH :-)
As for the corporate name, if you do business in lexington you learn quick that there is a strange dome over the entire city and it is made of old money. Just as in the new 30 mil practice facility, an individual's name will be on the new digs. THAT will be how we stay one up on Louisville.
